I'm pretty sure it is rust. It's wasn't leaking, but I replaced it. I think it is from our water which does have a high mineral content.

If there's a lot of iron in the water it could be rust from that instead of the container itself. Hard to imagine a galvanized surface rusting so quickly.

so, just bought the heated base for the galvanized waterer. I plugged it in and left it for about 1/2 hour. It was not warm at all! Then I noticed label states “turns on at 35F”, so I’ll have to wait to see if it works. I’m curious bc the packaging states works to 10F. We will have it inside the coop, plugged directly into an outlet.

I purchased one last fall at Tractor Supply. I worked great. You are correct, that it will not turn on until the temp drops to just above freezing. Good luck!
