has any one else gotten shipped eggs in the new foam shippers?????

I Have Started To Use It When Shipping Eggs. The First Couple Shipments Were Sent In The #7 Priority Mail Box From Usps. They Are 12x12x8. I Packed Newspaper In The Bottom Then The Foam, Then More Newspaper. This Worked Very Well With No Broken Eggs And The Air Cell Intact. I Also Sent 2 Boxes Of The Medium Priority Flat Rate With Very Little Newspaper. One Was Ok The Other Had Two Broken Eggs. I Very Seldom Had Broken Eggs When I Packed Them In Newspaper However The Foam Is A Lot Less Labor. Newspaper Is Free. The Foam Pads Are Expensive.

I personally don't like the foam shippers. I think the internal parts of the egg adsorb all the shock from shipping because the eggs themselves can't move at all. I prefer the box be lined in foam and each egg be bubble wrapped. I just received a shipment of 26 eggs in foam shippers. None were broken but all the air cells were detached and only 8 are developing. They got pretty scrambled during shipping. I will never ship eggs that way.

I'm going to throw this out there and see what people think. I theorize that if the eggs are held immobile in the boxes then the contents of the egg are going to receive the brunt of any jostling.
Let me illustrate it this way. Old cars had much harder bodies than cars today. You could hit a tree and barely make a dent in the car, but injuries to the people inside were much more severe. Now the outer shell of a car crumples like an accordion but people walk away because the shell of the car absorbs the force of the impact. All the force has to go somewhere, you know what I mean? It's basic physics.
I think the eggs make it best if they're packed in something that gives around them, like peanuts. Foam itself is great, I just think that if it is in a solid block inside the box then the only "give" inside that box is the contents of the egg.

And I'm the person fifelakelooper referenced that had 2 broken and 1 cracked in foam. Some of the eggs that weren't outwardly damaged had ruptured air cells. *sigh* I'm hoping that 30% of the number shipped will hatch, because that's what's developing now. I don't blame the foam, mind you. I blame the Post Office. The eggs were very well packaged and the seller sent lots of extras so all I've got to complain about is the PO(s).

You explained it much better than I did!

And here when I saw your post I thought, "That was so much more succinct".

I received eggs last year packed in foam and I hope I will never get any like that again. The eggs were hard to remove and they had detached air cells. Not the fault of the shipper nor the foam, I'm sure it was due to the handling they received in transit.

ouch! I dont use it nor have ever gotten them in foam shippers:( I do know a few folks on here swear buy them though--chooks chick? I think she even sells them? I hear great things about her shipped foam eggs..???

Chookschick has been the only person I've received eggs in foam from. So I don't have a whole lot of experience with the foam but after 3 shipments, I've formed an opinion.

The first dozen was in the smallest box the foam fit in. No broken eggs but they did have quite a few detached air cells......zero hatch.

She sent me a replacement dozen for cost of shipping and I also ordered a second dozen at the same time. These 2 dozen came in the same size box but she taped the two boxes together. None broken but lots of broken air cells. 3 of 24 hatched.

One more set of 12, eggs still packed in foam but in larger box with a buffer around the foam.....no broken air cells....4 hatched.

For a grand total of 7 out of 48 eggs! My own hatching rates here at home from my own pens are 98-100%.

I've come to the conclusion I won't be buying anymore eggs that will arrive packed this way. Just my 2 cents.
