has anyone ever been succesful with hatching beta fishes at home?

L*A*G* :

the females eats the eggs and males eat the babies!? how dumb

That's the way most fish are, though. Quite cannibalistic of their fry. Remember though they are not 'designed' to be breeding in little aquariums, but rather out in the wild with lots of area and lots of plants and stuff for the fry to hide in.

The only reason male bettas don't eat the eggs (usually) is that they have instincts to tend the bubblenest (some other fish, mostly cichlids, also have considerable parental care behavior); the only reason people are not mentioning *female* bettas as eating the hatched fry is that you remove them after the eggs are laid so they do not have the opportunity

There are SOME fishes, again mostly the cichlids, where the parents will tend and care for and protect the young rather than eating them; but that is by far the exception not the rule. Even peaceful things like tetras and corys will eat their newly-hatched fry if they get the opportunity. Snacks!

actually, my male didn't eat the babies, there were lots of them that he tended with loving care, until they were free swimming. but my undergravel filter got a bunch.

I fed them just hatched Brine Shrimp and the babies will eat each other as well.
so when I left to visit my fatther (due to his illness) I had lots when I returned there were only 33 of them left in the tank. they were moved to a 40 gal breeder tank then to cups and then sold.

Funny this topic came up...My fiance bought a pair for me and I am doing research to attempt to raise some. Always had live bearers (like guppies) before and I wanted to try something different.
This pair came from Thailand through a transhipper and is supposedly a good breeding pair. We will see!!
