Has anyone ever got chicks from these hatcheries/farms?

Are u looking for a specific breed? Just curious since u are asking about small hatcheries. If you are wanting recommendations about where to get a specific breed (such as black copper marans), u might start another thread asking for recommendations from others re the breed(s) you are seeking.
Deathlayers, Ayam Cemani, Buff Laced Wyandotte, Lavender Orpingtons. That’s why they’re smaller hatcheries.

Do they have a good reputation? Has anyone ever bought chicks from either of them? Any reports of diseased birds from either one?
I have only heard negative things about Featherlover. I believe it’s sort of a warehouse or broker. They are way over priced in my opinion. I recently placed an order with Carolina rare chicks. They have Brahmas and English Orpingtons. They have some gorgeous birds and many of their foundation stock of the Orpingtons came from “Ewe crazy” lines which were imported directly from England. Unfortunately I had to cancel my order due to unforeseen circumstances. The owner Daniel is quite lovely to work with. Very responsive to my emails. He refunded my full amount no questions asked. He has many color varieties of the true English Orpingtons.😊
So, obviously I can’t speak to the health of the birds as I never actually got them. Good luck in your search.😊

BBB is paid for by the businesses and only those who wish to be included are.. What a bunch of fake BS!

Call the county/state department of agriculture, or the state attorney general, state poultry vet, department of consumer affairs, etc.. and file a real complaint! Call the news station(s) and get them to write a human interest story.. about being taken during Covid by someone practicing shady business!

DON'T BUY FROM.. FEATHER LOVER FARM's in CALIFORNIA!!!

Shady thieves just worried about taking orders and money but not fulfilling them.. "Sorry we over looked and refused your $350 refund for months on end, our life is more important than yours!" Obviously, they remove ANY review they don't agree with SAME as AMAZON! Why won't google let me review them like it does SOME businesses??

Won't someone start an article/thread.. that includes a compiled list of those actually being shady and not facing a ONE time challenge. Make it a poll, NOT to include big hatcheries.. which generally run according to an "acceptable" business model.

WHY didn't I look at other reviews before placing my order.. and within days of doing so KNEW I would likely be facing the same.. it was too late, I was locked in to their policy.. which they DON'T comply with in the end. :smack

Marek's doesn't scare me, it claims about 20% here so far.. vaccinated birds NOT welcome to HIDE symptoms beyond natural resistance, once I was educated about it.. I CAN accept my truth and ALL birds are sold WITH disclosure, also usually for top dollar. I breed to improve genetics NOT to improve pharma's bottom dollar. It's a huge sacrifice AND tough line to toe.. but sits best with MY heart and goals.

@Castlewood Sorry you had to go through this!

I've never seen MS/MG in my flock or had it come back on necropsy report.. YET. It does scare me a bit.. or at least keeps me from bringing in outside birds MOST the time. I do still buy NPIP chicks at times and recognize that there are literally NO guarantees, we can only do OUR best according to our current understanding! :barnie

WHY does NPIP only test for so few things and NOT the things that effect TOO many back yard flocks and are highly contagious! Ah, perhaps because it's about protecting people physical health (salmonella).. not chicken health/life or human mental health.. NO doubt ALL the industry "layers" of big chicken are vaccinated against this crud so it only effects back yarder's same as Marek's and does NOT impact our national food supply chain.. big pharma, big chicken, big grain, or big government/special interest.. SMH.. vent, vent, vent! :rant

I feel like one of the breed club websites I have used mentioned their "show birds" being vaccinated for these types of things.. Maybe it's something we as whole community NEED to be MORE aware of AND consider.. My stance against Marek's vaccine does NOT translate across the board.. and ALL things should be taken with their OWN merit!!;)

These discussions are often very informative for me.
Thanks for sharing your journey with us! :hugs

I'm not the only one here on BYC that had AWFUL experience with Feather Lover Farms.. still well documented via email.

Understand that as a small time passionate HOBBY breeder, I FULLY comprehend ALL of the challenges faced with poultry keeping including parasites, disease, fertility, predation, wildfires, genetic challenges of melanistic breeds like Silkie/Cemani, etc. I do NOT think FLF is guilty of ALL the accusations made in the following links but it took threatening to contact my state attorney general before getting a response which they CLAIM to have refunded my $.. I haven't yet verified on my husbands CC statement.. but at ANY cost (not even keeping business local to California) I will NEVER do business with them and cannot recommend doing business with them..

Those are just a few quick thread that popped up by using the search in the upper right hand corner here on BYC and typing feather lover farms.. WISH I had tried that instead of goggle! You will get more return than what I copied and linked if you also.. oh wait, I can post the top link from my search.. but you get the idea..

RUN don't walk away..

If you want ALL those breeds.. get as many of them as you can from Greenfire farms.. or plan to order from more than one place. I've bought from GFF several times.. I'm not claiming their birds are perfect. But their business model is VERY acceptable, I would buy from them again, and have zero problem recommending them to a dear friend.. Importing birds isn't cheap.. MANY MANY smaller flocks ALL got their genetics from GFF. They always send one of not two extra chicks of each breed/variety ordered. They also sent anew year calendar and offer for % off next order if order placed by a specified date.. Chicks arrived in better condition than any other hatchery I've used thus far.

Lav orps are a dime a dozen common. tried them, overrated but beautiful.

I haven't seen buff laced Wyandotte.. yet.. I'm breeding lav Wyandotte for eventual lavender laced cream.. not there yet, and haven't decided on a final variety name.. I also have Cemani.. Hope to get NPIP before long to ship legally.. but my state was dragging their feet last time I made contact.. This is a new year, YAY! :wee

One smaller California place that MIGHT have some offerings your looking for, I have YET to see any cause for concern but also haven't yet patronized them...

It's taken me sometimes YEARS to get the truly rare breeds I was looking for.. or varieties I was working with.. you might wanna a project of your own! Paint Silkies was a fun start into genetics adventures.

Also understand that when you start working with truly rare breeds.. the diversity of the pool is not yet there to give them a lot of resistance/vigor.. this is something we MUST work towards.

Best wishes finding the variety and breeds/quality that you're looking for! :jumpy:jumpy
