Has anyone ever had to call poison control?

It's always scary when your child is involved! I'm glad it was nothing to worry over!

Twice I've called - DH was mowing and rode under a tree which had a nest of some type of saddleback worms/caterpillars. They stung the *** out of him, multiple stings on his back, arms and neck. He got a horrid headache, dizzy, sweaty, so I called and we figured out what they were. He was okay though.

When DD was not even a year old she found a piece of dried caulk on the floor (from bathroom remodel) and promptly ate it. I freaked and called. I freaked over nothing. I'm sure they get a lot of first time mom calls

Yep. My grandfather had his digitalis on the table and my DS who was about two got into it. He ate a whole teaspoonful!
I called poison control over my mother's objections...Like That won't hurt him. What are you getting so upset about? He'll just get sick and feel better." And she was an LPN!

I got his butt up to the hospital PDQ! And the doctors said that if I had waited it would've been too late. that dosage could've killed him. No kidding. I was on digitalis when I was small and knew all about it.

He never went back over there either.

If you visit grandparents or inlaws ALWAYS make sure that they keep their pills out of the way of the kids.

AussieSharon -- I can't believe they would tell you there are no blackwidow spiders in Kentucky (anywhere, really). They are traveling with food -- I think I heard some were brought into WA on grapes. What a horrible experience you had!

My oldest child ate a few flowers from my Mother's Day bouquet a few years back that I thought I'd put high enough out of her reach. She was fine though. Lesson learned- never underestimate how high your toddler can climb!

Second time- my youngest swallowed a 22 bullet. The main worry was the lead content but she was fine & pooped it out a few days later. Lesson learned- make sure hubby puts his ammo away & not in the console of the truck!

Third time, same child, one month after the bullet incident, got one of those little glow in the dark neon bracelets for Halloween, wore it to bed thinking she woulkd fall right asleep but nope, she laid in there chewing on it til she bit thru the plastic. I walk in her room 30 mins after having put her to bed & she is glowing pink! Her bed is glowing pink! Her floor is glowing pink! Since I had no idea what is in that glowing stuff, this incident really scared me the most. But again she was fine. Obviously she had gotten most of it all over everything else than she had ingested, although I should've taken a pic of her glowing pink mouth as that was quite a sight! LOL

Another lesson learned for me- no more glowing bracelets for my 2yr old!

When my youngest was almost 2 I had to call poison control. My now Ex-h had left the big red plastic gas can sitting on their wagon after filling the lawn mower. There was still some gas in it. Later my baby comes walking in from playing outside complaining that "Daddy has yucky juice!" Her mouth had a red rash around it. I leaned over and smelled her breath and she reeked of gas. So I freaked, of course!

Poison control told me that I shouldn't make her throw up, but should make her drink a big glass of milk. They said aspirating the gas would be REALLY bad, and to rush her to the ER if she started to vomit. But the milk must've nuetralized it and she was fine.

Her Daddy wasn't, when I got done with him. He made the mistake of telling me it was no big deal. One of his many errors during our time together...

Yep and not knowing better I believed them because the lady was dead set that it couldn't have been a black widow. She told me if I felt bad to take some Tylenol. Even the Drs at the hospital didn't believe me. Thankfully for some strange reason after it bit me and I put it in a ziplock bag to take to work ( worked for a vet who was big into insects etc, but accidently forgot it on the counter ) Hubby was able to go home and get the spider and it was confirmed to be a female black widow.

Now that I live in Va there's no problem identifying black widows. They are everywhere!

AussieSharon -- Smart of you to bag it for id purposes.

I can't imagine living with those things all over the place, but I guess at least you know they are around so you can be careful!

When we first started "trusting" our young son to brush his teeth by himself, we got some yummy bubble gum flavored toothpaste. He ended up eating the whole tube of toothpaste one afternoon (it just TASTED good!!) We were concerned about the fluoride content. We called poison control and they asked his weight, age, and contents of the toothpaste. All turned out to be okay.

*and second time mom calls!! My younger son ate it all-- cat food, crayons, pennies, plants, birth control pills!!! Musta been in 'training' euen then-- He's now a CHEF!! lol!

Angie, glad your daughter is okay. Been there, done that. Remember? My kid's the one that dined in the kitty litter box! The poison control guy was very professional and didn't laugh...at least not while we were on the phone.
