i know that everyone on here has seen or heard about hawks getting chased by crows once of twice before. but has anyone ever found a nest of crows and raised some of the babies, got them to stay around the yard and live with the chickens and if a hawk came the crows would chase the hawk away??
just wondering.
also would that be illegal since its a wild bird. i have no idea. thanks. cole.

My dad had a crow, but I don't know why. All I can say, is I remember having to go out very early in the morning because if I didn't the crows would eat the duck eggs my ducks had laid during the night hours. I just fight birds of prey with canopies and other things the chickens can use as cover......and of course with a 22 rifle.

I don't need to raise any. I have a family of them that I feed at least once a week anyway; during the spring it's almost daily due to the babies they have. I mainly feed them the cheapest dry cat food I can get. Even if I weren't feeding them, we have a lot of crows that live in the neighborhood so it's obvious when a hawk is in the area.

i personaly love crows , they are extreamly smart (not as smart as ravens tho ) you can easily build a relationship with local crows and keep them around, great if you have a nearby nest , if youdont you can encourage a pair to nest on a tree on your property. they need fairly open type trees, they keep very vigilant watch over thier teritory and they like there nest at about 15-20 feet with another 6-10 feet of tree abouve the nest area. the feamales love anything shiny so if you provide somthing like shinny string or thin pieces of tinsle that will encourge a male to build his perspective mate a nest in one of your trees, especialy if you feed them ocationaly. individual birds also have there own personalities and you will actualy be able to tell some of them apart. once the nest near you they will always be there they very rarely abandon a nest site .

I buy the big bags of corn on the cob for squirrels from our local pet store and hang them from the trees around our coop. The squirrels love them and so do the crows

I love crows too. I had one when I was a child. The naughty boys that lived behind us shot it, we found it in our yard and nursed it back to health. It sure was a neat pet, and yes, he was pretty smart. He was much smarter than my chickens, but don't tell them I said that.

Interesting idea on keeping them to chase away the hawks. I don't know if it would work. In the town I live in, it is listed as prohibited in the municode to keep them.

We have a pair or Two here that build nest every year in the pine tree's they chase away the hawks here or sound off if one is seen.
Crows can be raised we had 2 when i was little that had fallen from a nest during a storm and they were just like having a parrot.
We released them when they became adults because my dad said they are wild birds and they needed to be free.
I don't remember if they stayed around or not but i really missed them they would sit on your arm and eat peanuts and do the Cawing sound.

thanks everyone. love the stories.
im thinking ill try to attract them . ive got a few things that would be of interest to them.
i love crows!!!!
