Has anyone ever slaughtered named birds?

Yesterday I processed a 19 week old roo, who had been incubated here. Yesterday, prior to the butchering, my 11 year old son proudly told me they named this roo, Victor von Doom. Sigh. At least they got the doom right.

Almost made me feel bad. Almost.

We are also fairly new to raising chickens...and currently have 18 hens and 1 handsome rooster named "Roo" (very original)

. Last year we had some older hens and another rooster who started to get very territorial. Well needless to say the hens and that rooster are now in our freezer, but i couldn't have any part of it. I found someone to process our birds and my wife, scary, was very excited to learn how to process chickens and actually participated. Don't get me wrong i truly believe in raising our own food, taking care of our animals but just can't participate in the inevitable. Luckily for me i have a wife who grew up on a farm and can handle it. we are currently looking to get 25 - 50 meat birds in the spring and fill our freezer. We only had 1 prior which was a Tractor Supply mistake and she was named "Perdue".
but i guess no we don't name all our birds.

We were taught not to name the food. Once an animal is named, you have a psychological connection to it and it gets tougher to "do the deed". If you must, use euphamisms like, McNugget, Stewie, Dumpling, etc.

Pets (dogs, cats, horses, etc.) are named though. Growing up, we had a junk food theme for the cats: Pepsi, Sprite, Dorito, Frito, Snickers, Peanut, Cocoa, Oreo and so on...

Names have no power over you if you don't let them. Some animals have personalities or characteristics that distinguish them from their flock mates and they get names. If I only have a few of a certain animal, they all get names.

They all become food eventually...either for you or for the worms, bugs, bacteria, fungus in the soil.

My advice? Get over the whole name game and get a realistic approach to life and death. It comes to us all and we have names too. Name it anything you want and then eat it...the name will not change the taste, I assure you.
