I am currently working on something like this. I was actually hoping for pink chickens, but I may find out they turn more purple then pink.

Too bad i have to wait until next spring before I am ready to begin breeding them.

Then it will take an estimated 3 generations before they actually appear somewhat pink.

Oh well. haha if some turn out purple I will be sure to share. But of course mine wouldn't quite be the black with purple sheen your looking for, but more of a smutty red.

I'll get back to you next year. lol

After I see what I'm dealing with.

As far as simple genetics go, this should not be a very hard task. We know we can get leucism, albinism, and varying ranges of Axanthic.

So if you can take a bird that is primarily red and breed for the recessive gene of leucism while maintaining erythrin you will have a bird with solid red expression.

There are many varieties of blue and grey birds. When combined with a homozygous form of red you should be able in 2 generations make a purple bird.

Perhaps simpler and more effective in timespan relation would be to breed for an axanthic type of bird. One that Maintains Erythin production but has lost the ability to produce yellow. Then this bird could be crossed back over to a self blue or another bird with a deeper blue or deep green gene. The lack of xanthin in the green bird would produce a solid blue where the green belongs, and in 2 generations you should have homozygous purple animal.

The only real drawback i see to creating a dark blue bird is that most blues in birds are structural. An optical illusion in reality. Tiny air pockets in the barbs of feathers can scatter incoming light, resulting in a specific, non-iridescent color. Blue colors in feathers are almost always produced in this manner. Examples include the blue feathers of bluebirds, Indigo Buntings, Blue Jay's and Steller's Jays.

Hope this helps!

Aaahhhhh BUT young grasshopper, just because the SOP currently says purple is not allowed doesn't mean it will stay that way.
