Has anyone ever tried to get a emergency injunction for their hens?

I didn't see DUCKS on that list <insert evil grin>

I have egg laying ducks. My runner gives me an egg a day. It is the size of a jumbo chicken egg. I was also getting about 6 eggs a week from my buff before I sold her. I hatched out one of her daughters and the dad was a khaki campbell...another excellent egg laying breed. My khaki female was also laying almost an egg a day before she died. Right now I am raising 3 Welsh Harlequin girls and by fall I should up to my eyeballs in tasty delicious duck eggs.

Until you gets these idiots to grow a brain, I would trade my chickens for a flock of ducks and then moon them all.

crud - wish I could just omit the last sentence and go with the null and void part - not sure of when this law passed however our town ordinance came into effect in 1995.

- consdiered getting guineas for eggs - haven't really given ducks much thought - I have a nice koi pond in our garden / hen setup not sure I want ducks destroying it - think it would be mean if I sectioned off a area for ducks and gave them a kiddie pool? Anyway which is better for egg production guineas or ducks ? We have a familly of 7 Me, my husband & 5 kids - we go through ALOT of eggs. Might consider ducks if egg production is better.

Heck no! Many of the duck owners do this. Until I built my pond, my ducks played in an under the bed storage container that held about 10 gallons of water. My big ducks will still climb in the baby ducks swimming bowl even though those goobers now have a 500 gallon pond

I don't know anything about gunieas except that they are loud as all get out. I have only had one really loud duck and I sold her to a couple that live on some acreage and don't have close neighbors.

If you get ducks for eggs, I would recommend Welsh Harlequins if you can get them. They lay about an egg a day. They are pretty mellow (as far as ducks go) and you don't have to worry about them flying away. If you can't get that breed, khaki campbells or runners are also great egg layers but a little more high strung. If you want to torture your neighbors, get a buff. The females are loud and obnoxious. FRIENDLY, but they have been described by more than one buff owner as "bossy little busy bodies". I know mine was (she was the mouthy duck I sold). Her daughter is not quite as bad as she was. She is still a bossy busy body, but she isn't as loud

I say fight . I agree. I do think that alot of things in todays foods are making us sick. Both my daughter and I suffer from Auto-immune diseases. I have major health issues with my thyroid, and also suffer from FMS. My daughter who is only 10 suffers from Lupus and also confirmed FMS. One of the reasons I have my own chickens is because that is something I can do in the city to provide for my family. I know how they are treated I know what they eat. There is so much in our milk , our meat, even our water. I know they are linked to many health issues. I do not think anyone has a right to tell us we can't provide pure healthy food in also a humane way. Good luck and Fight fight fight !!

Still fighting - looking like the injunction thing is going to be a no go - I refuse to give in to injustice playing out before me.
Our countdown to when our hens must leave has begun

- I spoke with several divisions of NC agriculture today to see if anything pertaining to state laws could help - but ran into a dead end - I however did talk with the State Vet who is willing to send me a letter on the risks of having backyard hens compared to other pets. I also spoke with our town mayor (again) who is proposing guidelines for our town's new animal ordinance on June 22nd - she said that she would like to see our town adopt the policies of a neighbooring town that has guidelines but allows hens, I'm keeping my fingers crossed but not putting all my eggs in one basket yet. However in the meantime our girls must go - and we were told that if the council decided in our favor it would be at least 6 months before we could get our girls back. I don't see why we couldn't be granted a "stay" untill the ordinance is finished.
I see this as a way of the town saying - maybe if we get rid of the hens she will forget & leave us alone. Just dreading the day when our girls go.

Have you called your state rep., they should have an office in your district and one in the state's captiol. Their staff should be able to look up any state laws, that might trump your local ordinances. If you are lucky enough to have a good state rep., they can be strong avocates for you.

Also in this month's Mother Earth News, there is a article on how poultry are secret weapons against pest control. Maybe that can give you some info on somethings to mention on the benefits of keeping a small flock. They eat all kinds of things that are potential health risk to humans or property.

Just a thought....Pam

Talked with state rep & state attorney this afternoon, I was told that the laws only apply to a comercial operation. No definition of how much one must sell to be considered commercial so I was wondering if law applied to a small scale egg operation. Attorney told me that yes this could be considered comercial but then the town would back me in a corner for having a comercial poultry operation on a residential zoned lot.

So sorry, didn't realize you called your state rep. Wonder whatever happened to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness, seems like that should trump any local petty anti chicken ordinance.

Don't fprget in many areas it is legal with restrictions yo use medicinal Marjuana. Chickens can be medicinal as well as the eggs.

Should chickens be more illegal than a controlled substance:idunno
