I have a RIR 2- 3 weeks. She is in great health, except...

There seems to be something on her spur toe. I've had her less than a week. I noticed it the first day and thought it was poop. Notice a few days later it was still there and tried to pick at it with my thumb nail. It wouldn't come off, but still just thought it was poop. Today, (6 days later), it is still there so I soaked it in warm water and it won't come off. Pulling at it seems to bother the chick.

Does anyone know what this is?

I will post 2 pix. they aren't too bueno cuz my camera won't focus on it.

She doesn't seem to have a toe-nail on that toe? That toe is called a "Prop-Toe". Could she have gotten it caught in something (wire) and pulled the toe-nail out, leaving a sore toe without a nail? Frostbite could also be an explaination. That toe could have been exposed to cold and just froze on the end.

Funny how ya'll focus on the toe nail. Since I couldn't see it, I thought it was holding the big lump of poo in place.

The person I got her from had a lot of chicks. They were in a large brooder which took up half his garage, but it looked well heated. With that in mind, I would think it wasn't frostbite. but I honestly don't know as it look almost like a large dark, almost black (again, the reason I thought it was poo) growth covering the end of her toe.

She walks fine, and shows no problem with it except when I messed with it trying to pull it off or when one of the other chicks pecks it thinking in is something to eat.

Probably because that was where the TOE NAIL was! Now it is just a blood encrusted (infected?) HOLE.

I think I would treat it with antibiotic ointment..and watch for any swelling or heat..
if you see that..get some penicillin, (Pen-G)..amoxicillin, or Keflex (cephalaxen)
to treat the infection systemically also.
might be a good idea to have some on hand.

mine is 4 weeks yesterday and its an black australorp and she has the same exact problem i thought it was poo but it wont come off either the difference is i can see her toe nail idk what to do about it
