Has anyone made a homemade egg candler like this?

You can also use a clay plant pot, the kind with a single drainage hole in the center. The main thing is to have a bright light shining through something thick enough to block out all the light except what shines through the window-hole. And then a way to set it up so it stands by itself & you have both hands to use handling the egg. You could have the window hole aimed up and put the eggs on top of it, or on the side & hold the egg up to it.
I don't often candle because I use broody hens to incubate eggs and they get cranky when you disturb them.

Well I was all worried about making one of these at first also, I made mine out of a coffee can. HOWEVER..... I threw it away after I figured out how well one of those small LED flashlights work when you cup your hand around it and set the egg on top

This really works best for me and you don't have to make anything

Turn out the lights and there you go. In this picture I used one of the white leghorn eggs that is currently in my incubator but I use this same method on dark brown eggs and it works just as well

I use the swirly bulbs because they don't put off as much heat. Works great..

I use a ceramic lamp base, with an octagon shape electrical box, and a "replacement" lamp cord. I cover it with a coffee can that I drilled a 1/2" hole in the bottom of. I also use a squiggly CFL bulb because the incadescent ones got too hot too fast!
If I were to make it again, I would add an in-line switch on the lamp cord.

I have also had good luck with the LED flashlights.
