Has anyone made a waterer with the 'chicken nipples'?

Does anyone know if Murdoch's carries these? I checked with our Big R and they don't and the lady there says that none of the other stores do either. Guess I could always order them from FarmTek.

@Dingleberry

I didn't think mine would like it at first. Just take the old pan away and they'll use it.

@aggie9296

There are lots of examples on here of how to make nipple system that would work for those that are vertical challenged inside their coup. I just used a bucket b/c it was easiest for my set up. A bunch of folks have hooked up piping to buck and just used the piping on the horizontal. I may consider doing a similar thing with rainwater one of these days.

When you get the nipples, they should say what size the holes should. You can use a drill gauge if they don't. Then a drilled 4 (3 in your case) evenly spaced holes in the the bottom of the bucket and screwed the nipples in. I try and put them toward the edge of the bucket so several chickens can drink at the same time. 3 nipples is probably plenty as that's all the more chickens that can fit under it at once.

So, you just screw the nipples directly into the plastic? Or do they need a washer and a nut?

order them from Neil here on BYC. he is much cheaper, and he can answer any question you have, he is GREAT! I'm planning a pvc water line coming from my water tank/bucket, i ordered 12 of them, son in law is going to make one or two as well, and i plan to make a couple to sell on craigslist and pay for my nipples so i won't have any money invested

i know that what i am about too say has nothing to do with the chicken waterer nipples, but i had one of those hamster/rat waterers, and that's is what my chicks drank from, the first day the figured out how to use it, it is way cleaner to use than a nasty bowl of water that the chicks kick poop and wood shavings into, i will never use a commercial chick waterer ever again, you all should do this, if you have not started doing this already, they cant waste water, they cant make it dirty, they can only drink from it

just a side note for the pvc pipe waterer, if you use a plastic pipe, you will have to drain any water in it before winter, because if it has water in it and it freezes, it will bust the pipes

I have a waterer with the basin which is a repurposed cat litter container (bucket with lid) and from the bottom my husband added a hose and the waterer nipple fits into the tubing or hose material we got at home depot. I have the bucket up and the hose comes down for the broody hens or the chicks, I can choose the height. Periodically, we change the tubing. It works well. I also noticed my bantams will get up on stuff to reach the other higher waterers, I try to have some up higher to keep them cleaner, and some lower.
