Hatch-a-long Countdown!!!

1. A few days ago a teacher at school had her incubator cut off (unplugged by accident) for a whole weekend and they were sure the eggs we're goners. I think this happened at the 10-12 day of incubation and the lowest temperature they got was around 60* F. The chicks actually did hatch but were two days late so they hatched on day 23. Your friend's incubating eggs should hatch out fine but maybe a little late. Wish her good luck! Also, I would try to find which egg stinks because it could explode in the incubator!

2. I used to use pine shavings for my babies but they would eat it and I didn't like that. I was afraid they would get impacted crops or they wouldn't be able to pass the chips. Now I use towels in their brooder and change them every other day. It's so easy because all you have to do is shake the dirty towels off outside, wash them and put them (or a different towel) back in!

3. I just use a regular 60-75 watt light bulb for my heat lamp. When you first take the babies out of the incubator and put them in the brooder, the temperature in the brooder should be 95*. Every week after that you should drop the temperature 5* until you reach room temperature.

I wish you good luck!
Whew!!! Thank you so much PoultryGirly!! I was so afraid it was a lost cause, now I have some hope!! I plugged them back in, in my room and am hoping that when we candle them first thing tomorrow morning and set them up for lockdown there is some more hope. I will send her your well wishes and visit the eggs this weekend to see if they are okay if they are hatching late. I'll definitely take out the smelly egg tomorrow too. How long does it usually take before they explode? Sounds horrible.

Is there a different option that is immediately reuseable instead of bedding? I don't know if we have the funds to buy a bunch of towels and/or clean them. The director of the program were we got the eggs from says to create multiple layers of: garbage bags, newspaper, and bedding (x4). Could I substitute the bedding for paper towels?

Thanks for the info. on the light bulb! Can't wait til hatch!!! =) How's everything going with your eggs?

I just lockdowned my eggs! All seem to be living except for one, but I kept that one in there just in case because it isn't stinking or leaking. There are 3 days let!
How long does it take until they explode? I've never experienced any smelly/rotten eggs in my 2 incubations, but I'd guess a couple days to a week.

Bedding? This may help you: http://www.mypetchicken.com/backyar...f-bedding-or-litter-should-I-use-for-H67.aspx ... I would just go ahead and use the pine shavings. The chicks usually just eat a few of the shavings and figure out that they don't taste good and stop eating them. An even better way to make sure they don't eat too many would be to put several paper towels over the pine shavings.

Thanks for the info.! I will remove the smelly one(s) out tomorrow morning and will put a layer of paper towels over the shavings for the first few days.

Sounds great!--- My eggs went into lockdown this eventing but I'm worried because their eggs aren't filled all of the way up! If these ducklings don't hatch I'll be so disappointed!

My eggs went into lockdown this morning! I'm so excited! But already staring at the incubator as if the eggs are going to magically become ducklings in an instant. :/ The wait begins! :)

So my humidity is where it should be according to the incubator directions. The eggs are out of the egg turner and I have them huddled together to maintain warmth and keep them in the center of the incubator. I am overly excited and was wondering how long will it take before they could start rocking and moving? And since I will not be opening the incubator (promise) I was wondering how could you ever know from looking in what an internal pip looks like?

(PS: it doesnt look like it but there's a layer of tulle under the eggs so its a softer surface.)

HELP... we went moving the ducks to lockdown status. And realized that one duckling had pipped through the air cell AND had made a crack in the egg! But the humidity was low all weekend and it was in an egg turner til today.

We added water to increase humidity and it's still low, can we open it quickly to put water in and should we do anything for the duckling that pipped???
