Hatch-A-Long (May-June)

Hi all! I have a homemade incubator... the first hatch I did was pretty good, ended up with 4 B.O. but the last one I did none of them got past the first week. I didn't have a thermostat and Ithink it got too hot

well, Iwent and got a water heater thermostat and it's working PERFECTLY! I set 8 millie, 5 EE, and 6 B.O. on May 15th. I candled them last night and saw the exciting little blobs dancing! It feels like Christmas

Congrats!!!

Chickenpooplady~ Ijust went out and checked... Ihave a broody! She stayed on the eggs I left with her yesterday... I guess it'll be a race to hatch here! Silly B.O.

YAY! That is really exciting! I wish that one of my girls would go broody. I even have two buff orpingtons! A few months ago, one of my barred rocks was sitting in the nest box at night. She was even spreading out her wings and arranging the shavings. I got really excited and ran inside to get online to look for hatching eggs. The next morning, she was outside of the coop walking around with the rest of the flock. I guess she just wanted to sleep in the nest box that night. She tricked me.

I can just picture her snuggled up in the cozy nest box thinking "Sucker! I played that out pretty well!"

We have 11 eggs in the incubator now. This is day 13. I checked them yesterday and it looks like the majority are developing. I could see movement in 9 of the eggs. The eggs were from our chickens on the farm. We are hatching at our suburban house and may keep 3-4 of the chicks. The rest (and all roosters) will go to the farm to live in peace and quiet.

I did not remove the other 2 eggs because I am not sure (dark eggs) and they didn't smell. If we get 9 live chicks, I will be very happy. My 7 year old twins love the chickens and they are very tame by the time they go to the farm. We are out there all of the time to visit them. The kids are going to experience with showing chickens at the county fair this summer/fall. I think it will be a good experience for them.

I have a question abot candling. Today I candled a few of my eggs and I think I saw veins in one or two of them but their were some with big blobs. They didn't look they would be chicks but looked like maybee it was the yolk or something. It was like this in a lot of them but their were some that didn't have it at all so I'm really not sure what it was. Does that mean there's a chick inside, or that its going rotten, is it in anyway normal. I might not have a bright Enough flash light so I may try a different candling method but I was just curious what it might be.
