mine were 10 our of 32 infertile, and the one with dark mass inside, I would leave it in there and see later on because they don't explode that early into incubation from what I've read, so it's good to wait and see.

I didn't really mean that it is going to explode, I just meant that the yolk looked like it had ruptured. I am just guessing. It could be doing extremely better than other eggs, and that it is just a really large blood pool, but there is no light visible in it at all. (other than the air sac)

** Update** So I left the eggs alone for 6 hours and didn't open the bator or turn them as I usually do about every 3 to 4 hours or so. I thought I would leave them alone since I had candled them. Anyhow, I just opened it to do my regular turn and check the temp and humidity.. I couldn't help myself and I just wanted to candle the egg I thought had a blood ring in it and as I was checking it I noticed an embryo! So I stared and stared and sure enough it moved! So just goes to show keep them in the bator and check again just in case! I really had to hold back not to open up the egg earlier as I was sure it had a blood ring.. It must have been a larger looking vein. So I'm back to 18!

This is my first time incubating! I have my incubator heating (pro series circulated air model 4200) and expect eggs in the mail in the next couple of days. I'm worried about the temp, though. The incubator has a thermostat on it, but I want a back up. Can I use a regular old outside mercury thermometer sitting on top of the eggs? Thanks!

I put a test batch of eggs into my mini eco , testing fertility of my serama and quail and the temp control on my mini as it had to be shipped back to the factory and fixed twice , For the life of my I can not remmeber when I put them in except it was in november , I dont have anything bright to candle them with so I can see some are dark in side but thats all , The incubator came unplugged twice for unknown amounts of time. Any chicks that hatch are going to be little miricle chicks

Kinzie I don't know about a backup thermostat, I have one and it is doing really fine... Have an extra heating source e.g. bulbs at hand because that might go bad. And about the thermometer, I am using the an alcohol filled thermometer (red in the middle in place of mecury's silver) right on top of the eggs and there is a digital one on one side, you can see in the picture below.

gabrielle so you are in lockdown???

It will be fun :) What kind of eggs are you going to hatch? How many are you getting?? I have a reg old outdoor thermometer/hygrometer although I ordered a digital to go in with it and it hasn't arrived via amazon yet so I'm still waiting. Good Luck keep us updated!
