Hatch-Along - Eggs set in November, due December, anyone?

That sounds like an interesting mix, Chicknlove. I wonder what they will look like... :O?

Candyman, I am guessing that maybe your incubator is a bit warmer than under the hen, so maybe the ones under the hen are just developing slower. I wouldn't worry too much. Just think that if one batch doesn't hatch, you still have the other. :3

I am also worried about my own eggs. I candled one yesterday, and I saw what looked like a blood- ring. DX I am hoping that it was just the first few veins growing from the body, that were just inconveniently in the shape of a circle. lol I will candle them ALL tonight and I can't wait. :D It will be sad if they all look like that...

hmmm it seems like I have been doing it right though...

Poule de luxe, thanks for the info. I can't wait for mine to get here

Question: If I free range part of the day do I still need to provide grit? There are little rocks around. I have a hen that will be 20 weeks on the 2nd of Dec. will she still start to lay even if it is cold? I feed laying crumbles so I don't give extra oyster shells, this should be ok too right? I mix chick starter/grower and the laying crumbles so she will get both.

It's not the cold but hours of light that affects laying.
If you don't feed anything but chicken feed (no scratch, scraps, etc.) you don't need grit either since the grain in it is already ground.
The extra calcium isn't needed until they lay so I'd cut back on the layer until she lays but once they lay they appreciate the extra in oyster shell or you can grind up egg shells.

thankyou katsdar and 3D for the hopes

and maybe both of you are right, that makes sense.
the eggs under the hen are different in a way that I could see a mass inside, light wont pass completely, just like my incubator ones, but there were no veins and neither was there any activity inside.

and 3D I had a blood ring in one of my eggs too, I posted a picture too on 7th day candling, and there was only 1 dead in 22 total fertiles, so if yours was a blood ring, I don't think that more would be.... hopefully. Do post candling results and pictures if you can get some.

lol So you'll be able to watch them hatch, and then die the next day. XD Wonderful haha. I also just realized that it is day 6 for my eggs rather than 7.

I honestly thought it was Saturday. :hmm I think I will candle them later tonight so it will be kind of like day 7.... but not really. I have been thinking about candling them all day so I might as well.
