Hatch-along (for around September 1st)

I have four hens, two of which are mutts. The one that went broody is RIR/Production Red. She's the only one. I was prepped for my gold sex link to go broody but it turns out this girl decided to incubate. The first one of my flock.

Also cue an overprotective rooster and you can imagine my hands being full. I felt around her nest and took the outer ring of eggs from her. They felt comparably cooler to the ones directly underneath her. She was able to adjust herself as well. Also spread some feed and scratch around her immediate area and put the waterer closer with fresh water so she seems much more comfortable.

I'm setting about 40 eggs tomorrow. Is anybody else getting ready for an end-of-the-month hatch? Want to join in?

Eggs are: Welsummers, Cinnamon Queens (RSL) and Olive Eggers (FBCMxLegbar)

Incubator is an ancient beat-up 30 y.o. Miller styrofoam box which still functions adequately.

I have 9 eggs that went in Friday morning, Lavender Orps.
(30yrs! They sure don't make schtuff like they used to, do they!?)

And I found another hen going broody just now. Ah. What a headache. Went in to mark the eggs and I got pecked at by Broody #2. Still managed to mark the eggs but I guess the hens keep pushing each other off the main nest and stealing eggs. If it continues I'll find the B2 her own eggs but in the meanwhile, I gotta keep an eye on my other hens to make sure they don't decide to squat down too.

I set some eggs 4 days ago and then more yesterday so count me in I set 18 beautiful blue wheaten Americaunas from Larkrise here on BYC as well as 16 lemon cuckoo orpington eggs (set yesterday) that are kinda small. The orpington eggs arrived in a box all beat to hell so we'll see how it goes. Thankfully the eggs were packed well and none were cracked or broken.
Candled my am. eggs last night and only 4 clears from the whole 18 egg lot! I'm super excited!!!! Or should I say "egg-cited" lol
I'm definitely addicted to hatching!
I have my Brinsea 20 Adv. 'Batin the blue eggs and some of the orps and my Farm Innovator working on the orp eggs

I can't ever manage to wait it out... but I also can't ever manage to toss eggs until it is painfully obvious that they aren't going to hatch... like right before lockdown!! Haha. Hey... you never know, right?

Ya, the clears are the easy ones. When you get into marans eggs it gets a little dicey. Sometimes you can barely see a blob at first or second candling. Then you go with airspace and visual egg density to help you out.
I've got a bunch of olive eggers and haven't a clue how they'll candle. My favorite eggs to candle are the ones I hatched from Trader Joe's... The shells were really thin and you could see just about everything clear as day, the veining, the eye, the beak. They really jumped, too, when the spotlight hit.

Candled at Day 10 and pulled 18, and the eggs pulled were about proportionate to how many were set for each breed. What's left is 8 Welsummers, 8 Cinnamon Queens and 6 Olive Eggers. I'm still hoping to get 6-10 layer chicks. And, no, I haven't built the coop yet. Next week maybe.....

I had 2 blood rings, one 4-day quitter and the rest clears.... REALLY ugly air cells. The USPS was very hard on this batch.

I hatched out French marans, olive eggers & others this past spring. I bought a small flashlight that has 104 lumens. I could see right through the eggs! I was told that its all about the lumens.
