Im going to candle at day 7, 14, and 18(right before they go into lockdown). Everyone candles different some do it every day some do it once or twice. Its hard not to look because it is so amazing to see life forming and all the different stages of developement.

This is a great thread to look at to compare pics with what your candling

YAY! I love chocolate colored chickens.

I cant see the air cells But those pics are very good quality. Im going to be looking forward to seeing all you candling pics over the next 3 weeks. They will probably turn out awesome.
Thanks, I'm fortunate enough to have a decent camera and a tripod. I did go back and candle them by holding them and holding the candler on the top of the egg. I was able to see air cells (all attached thank goodness) on all of the eggs except #3. But I couldn't photograph it. Not enough hands. lol. Maybe I will have better luck next week. :)

At what stage should I candle? I've looked at other threads and it all made sense but when I candled the eggs when they arrived I wasn't sure what I was looking at.
@thecosmos your candled pix are fantastic. What are you using to candle?
I'm using a Brinsea Ovaview High Intensity Candler. Bought it from their website. Love it for the dark eggs. A flashlight just wasn't cutting it.

I also use an older Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8 camera w/ tripod. Turn the lights off, set the dial to "A" so the aperture is a bit bigger for light and click the button. I don't know much about photography but it seems to work well.

Hi!

I'm IN : )

I had Duck eggs lined up to set today (1-5-13) b/c that means they will hatch on GroundHog Day,
& there is something too silly about that to pass up!

The nice person who gave me the duck eggs also included some chicken eggs
(as I had a disaster filled 1st time w/ the NYD Hatchalong which I just cleaned out of my bator today).

So I've changed my diy bator setup just a little, and as of 8pm Eastern tonight I have

7 Duck Eggs - Welsh Harlequin (very exciting!! I have a pure WH Drake who will be happy for a proper mate, b/c the Pekin & Runner Ducks just aren't "it" for him)

11 Chicken : A Barnyard mix from her flock which includes Maran, Ameraucana, EE, OE, & Swedish Flower Hen (<- really hope there are some in the mix!)
The eggs are 6 mint green, 5 Choc.Brown of which one is more pink-grey-choc. & jumbo so maybe a SFH egg??? hope hope hope....

I have some trepidation about how I'm going to handle this mixed batch for lockdown & hatching, but last go round my Maran hatched day 23 & I've found out up to day 25 is normal for them,
so it could all work out fine and hit right around GroundHog Day, we shall see...

Happy Hatching Everyone, please DO TELL what you have set, inquiring minds what to know : )

Omg cant seem to quote on which post i want to quote with this silly phone
Sorry last eggs took 7 days I felt like you but got 3chicks This hatch i have in4 days i see 4 or 5 viables so dont count them out yet!

Fingers crossed for u, I would have been really disappointed if they didn't come today.
Yes, this will be a fun hatch group! I am very much a newbie but this is something I have wanted to do since I was kid, and I felt like a kid opening those eggs this morning! I will certainly appreciate all of ur experiences and can't wait to follow everyone's progress!
