Hatch-Along - Setting eggs this weekend (Jan5/6) WHOS WITH ME!

We set 45 rose comb Rhode Island reds yesterday. Hoping for better success than I had in the NYD hatch! We have 4 chicks out of 45, but I learned I had them upside down in the turner.

Oh no! Which way is upside down?? I already screwed up...I let the shipped eggs rest for 24 hours and then set them for about six hours. Then, i don't know why, but I plugged in the turner. It ran for about an hour before I re-read up on not turning them just after setting :0 I unplugged it and left the eggs alone. They did maybe a quarter turn, so the larger end is still on top, but I am sure everyting inside is resting on the outside wall as opposed to being evenly distributed...we'll see. I plan to start turner on day 3 and candle on 8.

Sorry double post, but welcome to those who just joined the hatch! Ducks and quail, how cool! akaRachel, what kind of eggs/are you hatching?

That's what I'm using. You can see my pic of it loaded earlier in the thread, but I don't recommend filling it as full as I did. My eggs were kind of rattling around too. I stuffed little pieces of cardboard in the gaps to keep them steady.
Thanks! I just didn't want to squeeze them too hard! I'm not turning them yet. I decided to wait 3-5 days since my eggs were shipped.

My chickens are quite the mix now. I started with hatchery barred rock hens with a black sex-link rooster. Then I added in some heavy red meat chicken. It will be great if I can get a little weight on my layers!

You should have the eggs with the fat end up and the pointed end down. And Im sure the 6 hours in the turner didnt do much harm.

I've got mine set and slowly baking in the incubator. Only 9..sheesh, but they will be GREAT! About the turning....it's as confusing as ever. I think I'm going to split the difference and start turning on day 3. I tried to candle mine but the brown ones are so darned dark that I can't tell a thing about the air cell. I could see the air cell clearly in the Americauna eggs and they were in tact. I'm hoping that they all are based on that small sample.

I'm glad we have some duck eggs hatching as well. My next run will be a few Indian Runner Ducks if I can find some eggs to hatch out.

I'm interested in what you've decided about turning Chicken Pickin.
I have SQ stock runners, but not currently laying. Let me know if you don't find any & I'll see if I can talk the girls into giving us some eggs pretty soon.

Hehehe....Thanks! I have to get through this hatch, but when that's over and I've gotten some chicks though the brooder we'll sit down and have a chat with your girls. I have a great little home for a few runners complete with a small ornamental pond for them to swim around in.

I actually have a trio for sale at the moment. The drake is a fawn & white from this past Spring & the hens are 2-3 years old, a chocolate & a black. Gonna keep my Summer-hatched blue drake & 3 hens from Spring hatch: a blue & white, a penciled & a fawn & white. I lost my blue hen & a fawn & blue hen 2 weeks ago to the cold before I moved them to my new house with better shelter.

I'm really looking forward to hatching some out. (The blue runners are beautiful aren't they..) I have contracted hatching addiction. This could prove to be dangerous.
