Hatch-Along - Setting eggs this weekend (Jan5/6) WHOS WITH ME!

i've added 15 more eggs for the second set, the thermometer isnt working and ive been to 4 stores and no one has a small one
jnjross...

check in the cooking dept at WalMart. We got two thermometers, one digital and one regular style reading that are both really small and intended for use as meat thermometers.
They are 'instant read' and actually do pretty well for many things. When we were warming our eggs to 'room temp' the other day I laid one at a diagonal across the carton to keep track
of the temp and it was within 1 degree of the one on the wall.
They may not be intended for incubators but there are many styles of the cooking thermometers so it may work for you.

Good morning!!! So day um...3...sheesh. Things are going well though. The incubator is rock steady at 99.8. eggs are sitting there staring at me saying, "Candle me, Candle me" and I'm saying "Noooo Noooooo...must...not...candle" It's like chickzophrenia here.

Haha, I think some of mine are saying "Candle me Candle me" and the others are begging me to plug in the turner!

Uh oh, I think I missed something. No turning? I read that only on day one you should not turn them?
The no turning is for shipped eggs. I start turning my eggs or local eggs that I pick up after 24 hours. Shipped eggs I let set OUTSIDE the bator for 24 hours with pointy end down & then in the bator without turning for another 24-48 hours. I never wait more than 3 days total. I'm always afraid the baby will stick to the membrane.

Wow page 30 already , I am not sure I can go back and read all the posts I missed. I just realized I have way to many eggs going on in to many places.

. what day are you going to candle?

So I decided to start a project while waiting for our new little chickies to arrive. This is inspired by another BYC member whos tread I recently saw and loved. Brooders out of household furniture. Right now I have a plywood brooder in my guest bathroom off my kitchen and since oddly that bathroom has no electrical outlet the brooder lamp is wrapped over the pocket door so it cant slide closed. So once I saw the inspiring furniture transformation I thought Im gonna do that.

step 1- craigslist free section - CHECK
step 2- search free section for a usable piece of furniture(I decided to go with a wooden entertainment center)CHECK
step 3- email for the furniture CHECK
step4- Pick up furniture ALMOST CHECK ( I pick it up tomorrow)

I will post progress and start a thread on it

Yay im excited to have a regular piece of furniture to house all my new babies and babies to come. I will paint it do go with my livingroom decor. SOOOOOO ECXITED!
You will have dust EVERYWHERE putting them in the livingroom!!! I house my babies in the basement after they are a few days old.

Why is anyone waiting to turn? I turn my starting on the day I set. The only time I wait to turn is if they are shipped and have damaged air cells.
The purpose of waiting the 1st 24 hours to turn on local or your own eggs is to allow the embryo to begin to establish itself & attach properly on the yolk.
