Oh, wow!!

well, you should be all practiced up by now!
I don't know how some of you ladies do it... my SO is youngest of 11. I give you all the credit in the world for being able to raise that big of a family!

My kids tell everyone they have the meanest mom on the face of the earth, but that she's only mean because she loves them. If she didn't love them she wouldn't care what they did but because she loves them she makes them follow the rules.

And those are some smart kids you raised!

Omg!!! I completely forgot to turn my eggs this morning before I left for work!! They are on day 9, 10, and 11....will they be ok until this afternoon (like 3pm) or should I send some one over there to turn for me? I work an hour away from home, or I would run home and do it. Ugh...how could I have forgotten this?!? To make things worse I think one or two have stopped growing, as I didn't see any movement and black blob just seems to float when rotating while candling. :(

They will be fine. I miss turnings all the time (between kids & birds & remodeling a house I'm surprised they ever get turned at all) & they do fine.

Yea, I'm leaving the coop light on at night now and they are laying more. Started with 3 them boomed up to 12 per day. Been losing chicks though, some bloody some just die in the egg. I'm going to try and not put water in the incubator and see if that helps, plus get one for hatching only.

Candled last night

(Day 10 for eggs set 1/5)

DUCKS 6/7 GOOD, 1 removed (this was my 3rd time looking and decided yes definitely blood ring which is now more brown than red)

CHICKEN
Choc. Eggs -- 4 or 5? of 5 GOOD, left the uncertain one in
Green Eggs - 6 / 6 I'm thinking all GOOD , 2 I could only see air cell & darkness, but originally I saw nothing so to me this says there is now a light dark contrast between aircell/embryo

(Day 3 for my one home flock egg)
Green - hummm, well it is only day three....cross fingers & hope

Overall I'm VERY happy w/ this so far, I think the small changes I've made since the first use of this diy bator have gotten a higher % of eggs to the Day 10 mark.

Also, despite the weather (ICE storm) our electric has stayed on, so I'm really happy about that, I did have a backup plan of using tea candles in stock pot to try to keep eggs warm if nec.
would give a whole new meaning to candling eggs , but luckily having a plan B has warded off the need to use it. Has anyone ever had to rig up an emergency heat source like this when they had no electric, I'm curious if it would work...
