Hatch-Along - Setting eggs this weekend (Jan5/6) WHOS WITH ME!

I use an OVAVUE by Brinsea to candle that works well. It also has an add on piece called an OVASCOPE that goes on top of the OVAVUE. Ya put the egg in the scope. It magnifies view, has dial to rotate egg for 360 view, web cam adapter, and possibly best of all..... you can use it in a fully lit room because egg is inside of scope. Sounds pricey but was under $65.

Ooook so i grabbed one of our powerful little flashlights and when me and my nephew turned the eggs tonight i glimpsed in them and saw little moving specks!!! I didn't spend to long looking so i didn't count how many that I was positive that I saw the specks in but I know it seemed like almost all 18 had it! It's day 2 1/2. I had to candle a regular egg from the fridge to make sure what I was seeing was real. It was very exciting :) My first time.
Very exciting! My first time candling was so exciting its such amzing thing seeing signs of life you are helping to create.

I haven't posted much on this thread but check it very frequently...Peggysue-(my fiancee) and I did our first turn today we decided to do it once today which is days 3 and then tomorrow we will turn 3in times a days til lockdown...getting so anxious and there is so much time left!! Can't wait to candle on Sunday or Monday! Although it is so hard to not go home tonight and do it!
Im excited to start turning also Im tempted to start tonight though I told myself Id start tomorrow morn. And trying not to candle is very hard, Im also trying to make it to the weekend. Saturday is day 7 for me.

Do you have to candle? I am nervous to do it. I tried it on one egg b/c it looked a little compromised, but I was very clumsy and am afraid physics and statistics will not be on my side if i try to do 13. I planned to do it on Day 14 as they are dark brown eggs.
I don't always candle. The only time I candle for sure is if I have late hatchers that I'm trying to find out if they are still alive or not. Any eggs taht are 2 or more days late get candled to see if there is movement or if it's a quitter before I pip into the air cell to check for life before doing an eggtopsy. So to answer your question, NO you do NOT have to candle. If you aren't comfortable doing it then just leave them alone & let them do their thing. Don't worry about them until they are 2-3 days late hatching.

Here's a glimpse at my staggered hatch with my quail babies. The 2 bigger babies in the picture were my New Year's Hatch-a-long babies. They were late & didn't hatch until the evening of the 2nd. The 2 little babies just hatched this evening so that puts them exactly a week apart. This shows you exactly how much a quail grows it's 1st week of life. I'm still waiting on 5 more to hatch from this batch & just set more eggs over the past 3 days.

My eggs are doing good. Temps and humidity staying stable. I was gonna plug my turner in tonight but decided to wait til tomorrow morn so I can keep an eye on the temp as some say the temp may rise.

We saw Gracie rolling hers around on the cam.... I'm wanting to reposition the camera to get a better view. If we can get the camera/computer thing to sync up I want to video her on the nest. It is really something to realize that hens are able to detect and regulate temps and humidity and turning and all! we resisted the urge to candle yet.... will wait for the weekend.
