Hatch-Along - Setting eggs this weekend (Jan5/6) WHOS WITH ME!

Well! Out of 36 good looking at lockdown, we have 26 little ones out and more coming! I still have my wrong end pipped Ameraucana but it seems to have gotten through the memebrane, so here's to hoping! The three that have just come out all still have yolk attached, so I hope we don't have issues there too. I took everyone else out of the incubator to the brooder so they don't get stepped on.

Ok, change that to two yolks and a placenta. Also one bad egg pulled that looks like it got clogged on the way out. The pip was upside down and all crusted over. Not sure what happened sinc humudity has been great, if even a but high. Wrong end Ameraucana is still in there fighting to come out!

Chicks hatching with yolk still attached & "crusted over" on the 1 that didn't make it sounds like humidity too high. Not sure what you are running, but try dropping it just a bit. The only 1 that may need the extra is your backward baby. Keep an eye on it's membrane to make sure it doesn't dry out or you may have to assist.

No more action from quail or Rainbows here. The rest will likely be late. We have 2 little quail in the brooder snuggled together & JJ (BigPoppy) has taught Maxi to "play dead." He holds her on her back in his hand & says "Dead chicken" & she closes her eyes & goes limp until he moves her. TOO FUNNY!!!

We have our first chick!!! First hatched chick ever

It's been going from about 74 to a bit over 80 with the chicks hatching. It's a hova with the circulated air. It makes sense, because it spiked the most yesterday with so many coming out. I did a little proactive care for them and tied off the yolks and placentas with srtong thread and snipped the empty sacs off, they looked vry empty to me just not detched, cleaned them with a bit of alcohol to encourage drying and a dab of antibiotic an got them out of what is now a very dirty incubtor to help with infection. The reccomendations here seemed to be try the above or just cull them. I'd rather give them a chance!

Here's a long awaited pic of a couple of the first to hatch! I believe my last 2 chicks weren't as vigorous upon hatching, because humidity was too high at 77%. I lost the last one of the 3. It didn't pip at all. It died before it even had a chance to break the air cell. (did eggtopsy). This is in a still air incubator, btw.

My Egg B is at 23 hrs since it peeped that I heard the 1st time.
This is like a bad movie on repeat - b/c my egg B last hatch I had to assist (that one DID survive)

Anyway, this one is 23 hr into using the air from air cell w/ no sign of external pip, I really hate to assist,
but it might be my only chance, and this was a great big dark choc. egg which I really want to be a hen who lays egg just like that!

I guess I'm going to do an external pip to give it air, and see if it can hatch itself from that over the next 24 hrs...
I have 10 mins. or so to make a decision and take action -- any thoughts on this from anyone on the thread?

BTW - when checking I found that Egg J , a small green egg is now also peeping (only when I bumped it w/ my finger)
so there is at least one other live egg atm.

I don't have any input but, want to wish you the best and hope things work out.

I have has no action today and really think my hatch is over and the other 3 have passed. Two are on day 23 and one is on day 21. Just losing hope on anything else.

Ok so Egg B is even more confusing now:

Since it was 23 1/2 hrs since I heard the first peep, I decided to external pip it.

The shell was really thick, harder to get through than ones I assisted last hatch.
I piped on the line I had drawn for day 10 aircell, a little above the day 17 air cell line so I could avoid the poss. of piping too low, into veins.
What I found is the entire aircell area was empty, w/ the membrane white, dry & all the egg shell easy to pull off from it , not glued or sticky, just dry.

The chick was peeping, but as far as I can tell, it appears to still be entirely inside the inner membrane, like there is air down in there and it never internally pipped into the aircell.
That inner seperating membrane which should have liquid in it also is rather dry, except that it still has some obvious veins w/ blood so the chick is NOT ready to hatch b/c the blood isn't all absorbed. But my DH said it looks like the butt end of the chick at the air cell (which I was kind thinking too) so possibly it did not turn, but somehow it is very dry and it didn't drown ??
But squinting it actually looked more to me like the beak is still under the wing, but not internally piped, as to do so it would hit a large vein that is right there in the membrane. yikes.

I have it in a hot moist papertown tent over the good sized opening I made in the air cell end. In theory it can be fine like that for 24 hrs or so, so I guess I'll wait and see what it does,
if it absorbs the blood in the vein I can see right in the center of the membrane over the air cell area...

If anyone has thoughts on this I'd love to hear esp. if you've seen this before. Thanks
