Hatch-Along - Setting eggs this weekend (Jan5/6) WHOS WITH ME!

Alrighty, I think my second hatch is done now. Started with 30 eggs, 7 were infertile so that brought me down to 23, 1 quit early so 22, and 18 total hatched. I'm leaving the unhatched eggs in the incubator for a few days still I guess or at least until tomorrow because I want to set more eggs

It sounds like you had a really good hatch rate! Today is hatch day for us. It technically started an hour ago. No pips or peeping yet. I hope everyone is doing alright in there. I wish something would happen. I know hatch day has just begun but it's so hard to be patient!

If this hatch goes well I might purchase some hatching eggs, for the next go around. If not, I will tinker with the incubator some more with my own eggs.

I want to buy some hatching eggs also soon. Still practicing with my australorps. By the end of my day 21 only 8 had hatched but throughout the night they must've been popping out of those shells left and right because when I woke up they were all done except one that was zipping itself out. Hatching is so much fun!!!

but congrats on the good hatch and hope the next works out as well!

I just had an order for 200+ quail babies. Will be ordering 500 eggs Fri & setting when they arrive next week. I need a new bator!!!! 2 of mine are full & not enough room in 1 little Farm Innovator for 500 quail eggs

That is great for you :) yah for making a big sale!
But I give up trying to figure it out , who on earth orders 200 baby quail & what for, I'm just completely baffled...

Meanwhile, I got enough eggs that I'm not setting in the incubator to make a double batch of oatmeal cookies which I've been wanting for weeks now, so I am having myself a little eat cookies party while it threatens to sleet outside.

Apparently 1 of them wants them for release on his property & not sure what the other wants them for, but hey, at $2 each per freshly hatched chick, I'm not complaining

yes, that is great. Doesn't really matter why they want them, just that they will pay you for them.

Still I'm just trying to even mentally picture 200 baby quail , when my brooder situation is almost over run by less than 2 doz chicken chicks atm.

I am pulling together materials to build 2 bigger better brooders b/f my first wave of hatching 3/9, & I have almost 70 chicken eggs set as I type so if my hatch rate is good, I'm not going to have to use very much imagination on what that many look like ; >

I actually have 4 brooders. The big 1 in the basement is 3x5 with wire bottom & sits up off the ground on legs for a total of 4 1/2 ft tall. The big 1 upstairs is an old wardrobe (laying on it's back) & is 5x3 & 2 1/2 ft deep. The 2 little ones are an old wooden toybox that's 3x1 1/2 & 16 inches deep & an old wire birdcage that's 18X24X18 inches. All of my chicks are currently in the 2 big brooders but will soon all be in the basement brooder. Quail will go wherever I have an opening at hatch since they are only as big as marbles at hatch. I often stick them in little boxes inside the bigger brooders when I'm only hatching a few at a time. The big hatch will have the babies all popping in 24 hours & picked up within another 24 hrs, so they may not even hit a brooder. I have 170+ chicks coming from Meyers on the 20th, so my brooders may all be full when these quail start popping.

Guess JJ has been elected to build another brooder by then.

I think it would be fun to hatch quail. They are so little and cute! Especially if you are only doing the hatching part - and getting paid for it! Sounds like a lot of fun to me.

I have 1 pip and one trying to zip right now. I think my temperature might have been a little on the low side during in this incubation period. Has anybody had a late hatch turn out well?
