Well, so far, 4 chicks have hatched and another 4 eggs have pipped. It's almost day 23 and I guess the "popcorn" like activity has begun. When the first chick hatched I started to get really worried. One of it's legs looks slightly deformed. I have at least one curled toe and it came out of it's egg all wet and sticky. It has dried half fluffy and half crusty. It also had a slightly bloody navel and it took a while for the rest of what I'm assuming was the umbilical cord to fall off. All the of the other chicks that have hatched have been fine. I hope this other one will be too. Does anyone know what could cause this? Is it just a low temp or something else?
, also how do you like them in your flock if you have hens already. I know the eggs can be choc. w/ speckles which is cool, but how well do they lay for you etc.. I'm always interested to hear about real people's actual birds, rather than the "sales pitches" from websites etc...
Hard to believe ours already look like miniature chickens already and only 5 wks old!
