Hatch-Along - Setting eggs this weekend (Jan5/6) WHOS WITH ME!

Well, so far, 4 chicks have hatched and another 4 eggs have pipped. It's almost day 23 and I guess the "popcorn" like activity has begun. When the first chick hatched I started to get really worried. One of it's legs looks slightly deformed. I have at least one curled toe and it came out of it's egg all wet and sticky. It has dried half fluffy and half crusty. It also had a slightly bloody navel and it took a while for the rest of what I'm assuming was the umbilical cord to fall off. All the of the other chicks that have hatched have been fine. I hope this other one will be too. Does anyone know what could cause this? Is it just a low temp or something else?

Humidity could be a bit high. It will cause sticky chicks.

The 4 almost 5 week olds were moves out to the coop yesterday to make room for the new ones hatching right now! Got one pip in a Welsummer egg!

Nice brooder, cute chicks. Great news about the new hatching Welsummer -- I'm curious what they look like as chicks... (yes want pics ;) , also how do you like them in your flock if you have hens already. I know the eggs can be choc. w/ speckles which is cool, but how well do they lay for you etc.. I'm always interested to hear about real people's actual birds, rather than the "sales pitches" from websites etc...

Summer (I know, original...) Is a sweetheart. She is just under a year, lays well at least every other day, and is friendly. Her egg is my avatar. The chicks look like little chipmunks! I had one for sure from her egg in the last batch that looks just like her, so I'm not sure if daddy is my FCBM or my EE. There are two others that might be her's too, they look like a serious cross between her and my FCBM.

Is it warm enough for them to be outside without heat? Mine are the same age but our temps are still 20 - 30 degrees. BUT MY BATHROOM HAS 3 SEPARATE CAGES WITH CHICKS IN THEM!!!!!!!!!!! UGH! This week end we are planning to build a brooder like cage for the screened in back porch and make it so we can close them in like maybe 3 x 3 ft box if it's really cold but let them out in a 6 ft run if it's not. I have in mind like a big rabbit cage. I never intended to start hatching this early.

Our welsummer name is summer too! Her eggs are beautiful! We aldo have one welsummer ( not our hens egg) in the bator now :)

Our eggs are on day 21 and we noticed 3 of 4 wobbling today idk when they started because we haven't had much time to sit and watch them the past few days. So hopefully by the end of the weekend we will have chicks. We have a welsummer barred rock and blue laced red wyandotte that are moving

If they are protected from wind and it is dry and have their feathers they should be fine with minimal extra heat. Ours played around in the coop at 30-35 degrees for most of the day and then ran back into their broody box/nest area to get warmed up, they have done this since they were a week old. They do still sleep there at night (will be 5 wks old Saturday) When I sit in the coop with them there are two who frequently like to perch on my knee or hand and nap. It is incredible how warm they are underneath!

I know we were starting to wonder what was going on with the eggs we had a lot of issues with the temp and stinky eggs so we weren't sure of what was gonna happen.and we have been so busy so we hadn't really had the chance to watch for wobbling or anything. My mom was actually the one who saw them wobble before we did. So we don't know if it started today or two days ago. Today is day 21 so they should hopefully come this weekend
