Our broody hen that hatched out 3 chicks, (just adorable) I guess left them in the middle of the night and maybe got up on the roost? Anyways, the little chicks must have gotten cold, they all went to chick heaven??!!

Oh no! That is so sad! Was this her first time hatching chicks? What breed is she? I don't know much about broody hens but that sounds like very odd behavior. I haven't heard of that before. From the little I do know, most people worry about hens leaving there clutch before it hatches. Not after they have chicks! Our broody hen that hatched out 3 chicks, (just adorable) I guess left them in the middle of the night and maybe got up on the roost? I'm so sorry. I had 3 hens setting and randomly they would get off their nest and another would get on. One morning I went out and there laid a lone chick on his side barely peeping. He was so cold. I picked him up and brought him in under the light and he's doing great. I worried that the very thing would happen to me. Again, I'm so very sorry. That is hard. I haven't had it happen w/ a broody, although I have had 2 diff. broodies crush their own chicks. I have had the cold issue w/ rabbits, more than once a spring blizzard & overnight kindling resulted in me finding an entire litter frozen in the am, whereas other rabbit mammas would do perfectly fine in identical conditions. But going out thinking happy thought about the little ones you expect to see, & finding dead ones is really difficult but it does happen to all of us from time to time sad as that is. Hope your next go round w/ chicks is much happier! Our broody hen that hatched out 3 chicks, (just adorable) I guess left them in the middle of the night and maybe got up on the roost? They start bouncing around the bator like popcorn.I think it would be fun to hatch quail. They are so little and cute! Especially if you are only doing the hatching part - and getting paid for it! Sounds like a lot of fun to me.
I have 1 pip and one trying to zip right now. I think my temperature might have been a little on the low side during in this incubation period. Has anybody had a late hatch turn out well?
Oh NO!!! This is why a lot of people use broody pens without roosts in them. If the hen has no roost she can't climb up on it & leave the babies behind. 1st time broodies often do strange things. Our broody hen that hatched out 3 chicks, (just adorable) I guess left them in the middle of the night and maybe got up on the roost?
