Usually it's ok, especially if he's getting air. I've had plenty that pipped on the wrong end and still hatched out just fine, but there are a few that struggle. If he's not out after 36 hours and he's still alive, I would intervene. I have saved many healthy chicks by doing this, but you need to known when the right time is. Chicks are very fragile at that stage.
