Hatch day fears

It doesn't look like it :hit Should I chip away at the shell a little?

Oh no!! Ok, this is what you need to do. Pick her up out of the bator and hold her in a warm, damp cloth. Go over to somewhere with good lighting, and use a pair of tweezers to slowly and gently pull of peices of shell around her beak. Do not rip the membrane!!! If you see any signs of life or blood or yolk, put it back in the bator immediately. While you are pulling off the shell, examine the membrane. Are there any visible blood vessels? What is the color? Is it a dry, chalky white/green/or brown, or does it look alive and moist? The chick could be just resting, don't give up hope yet... Don't pull away much of the shell- only around the beak and air sac unless you know for sure that the chick is dead. In that case, you can continue chipping away the shell and slowly, carefully open the chick to see what went wrong. Once again, if you see any signs of blood or life, stop. Good luck!!!! :fl

Oh I am so sad! I had to leave to take my Mom to a dr appt at 6 am and my hubby took it out of the incubator

I have one more that will hopefully hatch before the weekend. Wheezy is doing great (the first hatch) I put her in a coffee cup and her legs straightened out well and she is getting around fine. Other than that one I have 5 more that should start any time around the 16 to hatch I hope. . .I am so sad wheezy is all alone right now.

I wonder if the problem with it was because I was having to open it to put Wheezy in and out of the coffee cup?? My brooder wasn't ready so she was in there. But the humidity was fairly high so I thought maybe it would be ok.

So I get home and check the last egg expected in this batch and it too has died. Our poor wheezy is going to be an only child. She is going to be lonely. She is now eating and I am trying to get her to drink. Still trying to get the brooder right. Its up to 82, I am using 1 100 watt bulb in a medium sized plastic tote. What is the lowest a 2 day old chick can handle?

Awe I'm so sorry :hugs it's just life, I guess. You win some you loose some. Some first timers dot even get a single hatch, so you were actually lucky! Wheezy looks adorable, I'm sorry she has to be an only chick. I have had lone chicks and lone ducks, an lemme tell ya be grateful she isn't a duck!! XD try to get the temp up to about 95-100, 90 at the lowest. You can put a mirror and stuffed animal in the brooder to keep her company. I would also suggest giving her some Save-A-Chick solution (do you know what that is?) and what kind of feed do you have? Did your hubby take the egg out of the bator before you could try to help it? That's why I don't let any of my family anywhere near the bator during hatch time lol

Yep he put it out the cold garage, I found it when I got home and candled the other one and saw no blood vessels any more and no movement. I still have 5 bantam eggs that this will roughly be day 10 so I am going to candle them tonight and start keeping track. I am thinking of maybe buying a chick at the feed store just so she won't grow up alone. . . .I have just the chick starter feed, the medicated kind Manna Pro and is that the electrolyte stuff for the water? I was planning on getting that next time I was over there. I do have a stuffed froggy with bunny ears (was an easter gift to my girls last year) and its slowly climbing up to 92. She has eaten some but not much and as far as I know hasn't had any water yet. I am pretty sad because that other one had its beak out and was so close, but I think it might have been shrink wrapped where it couldn't move, because it didn't peck out a line across the shell like Wheezy did, just made a hole and couldn't go any farther.

Sounds good! An yeah the electrolyte stuff is for the water. Good luck!!!
And awe I'm sorry bout your other egg. That's why I never let any of my family near the bator till the hatch is done!
