i have washed eggs before and they do better than the unwashed ones, some of the unwashed ones developed blood rings and are not doing as well

Haven't had to wash eggs mine havent been that dirty yet i usualy just scrape excess off with my finger nail

lol thanks, it does look like an eye ball haha, just candled another egg, dark shell, cant see very much in it, but there is a dot, not a black dot, and veins i think, its not as far along as this egg, but i think its good so far...i hope

Well i have just had heart failure - a power outage! 2 hours and counting, bator is wrapped in tin foil and towels and is in front of the fire, temp hasn't dropped bellow 95 so Im hoping i can nurse them along like this until the power comes back on. Im not too worried as the eggs under my broody were uncovered for 4 hours and went cold on day 10 and i candled them at day 18 and they continued on just fine. Just praying the power comes back on soon!

I thought I would just say good luck on all of your hatches.
I have about 15+ silkie eggs hatching between today and the 1st!
very exciting as its my 3rd ever hatch.

Also I would like to say howw awesome the candling pictures are.

My power came back on, it was off for 2.5 hours and the temp only got as low as 91f once for a split second, but mostly hovered around the 95f mark. I just hope I didn't cook them trying to keep them warm by the fire! Anyway, I will probably candle on the weekend, sunday will be day 10 i think so should get a better idea then of how this little disruption affected them. Fingers crossed it had no ill effects

It may just take your eggs a bit longer than 21 days to hatch..perhaps 22. Or, it may not affect them at all. Luckily chickens eggs are pretty hardy and can take many mistakes on our part and still hatch. I believe it is much worse to 'cook' them then to have temps fall. Cooler temps just slow development, not kill them, unless they freeze ofcourse.

I remind myself that our ancestors hatched eggs with much less sophisticated equipment than we have. No reliable thermometers, no hygrometers and no electricity. If they could do it, so can I LOL
