What is a reasonably expected hatch rate on shipped eggs?

There are a lot of variables in shipping eggs. The packages get slammed and knocked around, many times damaging the eggs, despite the best attempts at packing.

I got two different bunches shipped to me this season. The first one appeared to be perfectly wrapped, no dents on the box. Not one chick hatched.

The second box was appropriately wrapped, the box looked like it had been around the world twice though! I put them in the incubator, figuring what the heck..... Out of 14 eggs I got 8 chicks, 5 hens and 3 roosters.

It is kind of like hoping for the best !

I have read folks are pleased with 50% hatch with shipped eggs.

If you can get at least 50% then you did real good. I have had any where from 0% to 100% but most of the time it's right around 35% to 50%

I have about an 80% overage, with anywhere from 5-48 egg count per shipment and with the worst hatch 4 of 12 and the best 5 of 5. My largest batch was 38 of 48. Some came from as close as Washington state or as far away as NC or FL. I've done better on shipped eggs than some local pickup but some of those problems were fertility related. I have had some look like they were treated pretty badly in shipping and still make it. I too feel that anything over 50% is a success.

I had 90% hatch rate on BBS Orpington eggs bought off of Ebay and they were shipped from Arizona to New Hampshire. Packaging was wonderful. I have 13 Delaware eggs due to hatch on the 11th and they are all developing nicely. They came from Delaware.

With shipped eggs I usually get a 50% hatch rate with my Sportsman.

But I am in Minnesota and I usually end of ordering eggs from the south. The one time I ordered closer to Minnesota I got a 90% hatch rate.

The first batch of shipped eggs I hatched out , I had 12 of 40 hatch. The second batch I had 11 of 13 and was incredibly excited. My first batch had some brokens in it and the box was beat up. Shipper did a great job of packing them, the post office just knocked the crap out of them. The second batch all the eggs made it intact, box was not so beat up. I honestly dont know why some do well and others dont.
