Hatch with me! Placed in bator on 5-13-2010. First hatch!

Ok here is an update!
I candled again last night and it looks like I might have 19 good eggs, plus.... 1 that I dont know will make it, 1 I'm not sure if it is dead or asleep and 2 marans I'm just not sure about, their air sac looks abit big from what I've heard ....Will check again later.

I culled 2 Marans that were for sure,

well I think, clear. The wyandotte that doesn't look to good...The chick is for sure alive, but he is much smaller than everyone else. Think he is just a late bloomer and will grow abit more before hatch day? Or is he a goner?

The best thing to do is leave the chicks in until all the chicks have hatched. They are good without food and water for 3 days~that is why you can ship day old chicks. If you have chicks that have pipped and open the incubator to take some others out, then the membrane on the pipped eggs can dry out (because your letting the humidity out) and trap the chick inside the egg (shrink wrap) and they will die. My last hatch the first chick to pip, pipped too low (almost at the bottom of the egg) and I wanted to help him in the worst way, but I new if I opened the incubator that I would be taking a chance on killing some of the other chicks!

I thought for sure I had sentenced that chick to death, but 31 hrs later he figured out how to zip and kick the top of the egg off! He was upsidedown with his feet up in the air, and I still don't know how he turned in the shell to zip, but I sure am glad he did

The same hatch one of the chicks hatched and was dragging around the top of the egg that had stuck around her wing! Again, I wanted to help her but I didn't want to take a chance of hurting the other eggs, so I waited and 5 minutes later she knocked the shell off by herself!!

These are good examples of why you should stay calm and not jump in too soon to help.

Yes, opening the red vent cap is ok, in fact once the chicks start hatching it is recommended that you open the vent so the chicks get more oxygen. Just be sure to keep the humidity at 65%. Do you have a plan for adding water to the outer water well in your incubator so you don't have to open it? Also, 99.5 to 100 degrees is fine. My temps stayed around 100 degrees for my last hatch and the chicks started hatching right on time
