hatched happily - how to tell if the brooder light is too hot?

    my chick hatched happily with a little assistance, dried off and very noisy :) ive popped it in the brooder with a little teddy for company seeing as the other chick hasnt hatched yet, i cant find a thermomiter, how do i tell if its too hot in there for it?

    If the chick sleeps right underneath the light, he is cold.
    If the chick sleeps slightly to one side of the light, he's just right.
    If the chick tries to get as far away from the light as possible (or is panting), he's too hot.
