Hatched on Day 29!

its real important that you have the humidity way up at this point so they don't dryout in the shell. add water to resevoir, add wet paper towels etc to drive humidity up to 70% or more
good luck with the rest, hope they make it.

temp about 101 on top of eggs and 99.5 on bottom. Humidity at about 45

What should the temp be for the little guy in his little habitat? I have a100W heat lamp on it now. Is he ok to leave at school and come back in morning to? I get here at about 6 am. I have a giant Maine Coon at home and I don't want him to hurt Mr. Peepers. Thoughts?

Your temp in the bator should be about 99.5 so I think you are okay. You need to up your humidity though to about 65%. It makes it easier for them to hatch. I think he will be fine provided that he has heat and you have him in a tall enough box and there is no threat of any predators. The 100W should be fine. If you are in a lab you should have thermometer so stick in under the lamp on the bottom of brooder and see what temp is. Should be about 95-100 for the first week. Make sure he has plenty of room to get out of the heat so he doesn't roast!! Good luck!

cackydoodledoo (and everyone else) you are amazing! Thanks so much for all of your helpful advise! I hate leaving the little dude, but he is safer here with no predators, than at home with a giant one....lol. I'm going to miss him tonight and I know he'll miss me! I did put the thermometer in there and temp seems a little low...I turned the AC up so that it will get warmer in the room which will help with his temp. Humidity is going up in the incubator! Hopefully I'll have some more chicks hatching tonight to keep Mr. Peepers company! I gotta get out of here and beat across Houston traffic! Ahh! One more question....I know I am worrying so much, but if he rolls on his belly can he get himself up?

Yes!!! They tend to mostly sleep on their bellies. If you watch him he will sometimes just fall over on it. I have some that start rocking, close their eyes and then fall over on their belllies!! It's too cute!! Good luck with traffic and your chick. Let us know how he is in the morning!

They should be able to. I had one that got stuck in the shell in the bator. He could breathe and all so I didn't worry about him. When I went to pull them all out he was really wobbly as he had been cramped in there for a long time. He kept falling over on his back and just rolled to the side and got back up so I think your little furrball will be okay!!

Oh btw I sure hope your feeling better!!

None of the other 6 eggs that were alive yesterday were alive this morning. I am bummed. I don't want the only 1 that did hatch to be alone.

Totally bummed.

How do you know? I wouldn't necessarily expect to see movement. But, I think a day 29 hatch is incredible! So many would have given up before then. Mr. Peepers is one lucky little guy. Can you share a picture? Do you know what kind he or she is? One way to sex them early is to lift up the wing and see if the lower row of feathers is longer than the top (that's a girl). If both rows are the same length it's a boy. It doesn't work with all breeds, and isn't 100% reliable, but it's fun to try. I saw that here -
. It's a Discovery Channel "How it's Made" - I think about 3 and a half minutes in. Incredible to watch!
