Hatcheries Quality Control of Illnesses?

hi there. i have a quick question for you all. i found a hatchery near by, HOWEVER, when i read the 26 reviews...12 reviews said that the birds they bought were unknowingly sick and died. Some even stated and others showed proof via the vet report of marek's disease. i want to practice good bio security. i can't in good conscience purchase from this place and put the 2 hens i already have in danger. my question to you is how can a hatchery continue to sell birds once marek's disease is found there? is there any authority who should be informed of this? is there some type of control over the laws of hatcheries? thanks for your input.

They can’t legally. What hatchery is it? Just use a better known hatchery, like Hoover’s or Meyers.

Read up on NPIP (National Pouktry Improvement Plan) certification. Hatcheries have to be NPIP certified to ship hatching eggs and chicks across state lines.

it's a local hatchery. i wanted to pick up the chicks, not have them shipped. in addition, i only wanted 2...so my options are challenging. yes, the more known hatcheries seem trustworthy.

Look up NPIP, as suggested. You can search for NPIP hatcheries and breeders near you on the NPIP website. However, you are in CA, it appears, and their data is in list format (and not in a visual map format -at least not that I have found), so get ready to scroll through a few pages! In addition, breeds are listed by code, so if you have breeds you are interested in, then you can see who might offer those in the NPIP directory. The breed codes are listed in a separate document on the NPIP website. It don’t take me too long to find the information, so you should not have too much trouble. Good luck
