If you read the details on the hatcheries' web pages you'll see that some breeds are considered more difficult to sex than others so the guarantee on the sexing is for 75 or 80% accuracy instead of 90%.

My order shipped from IA this Tuesday and I picked up the chicks from the post office yesterday. I was very disappointed and saddened to see that 7 of my chicks were dead.
Oh no! I'm so sorry. I heard that with all the issues with USPS, thousands of chicks were ending up DOA. It must have been horrible to look forward to opening your box and get such an awful surprise. I hope your next shipment arrives healthy.
I did check the hatchery website but did not find any statement referencing this. I was just wondering what I could expect. A friend of mine ordered 50 chicks from a hatchery in Quakertown, PA, 4 months ago and was fortunate enough to get all females. If I have too many roos, I am sure I can find someone who would like a beautiful bird. I will have them for several months before I need to decide. If you read the details on the hatcheries' web pages you'll see that some breeds are considered more difficult to sex than others so the guarantee on the sexing is for 75 or 80% accuracy instead of 90%.

Sorry about your chickens, that was a fear of mine. I am glad they are sending you replacement chicks. It sounds like a nice mix you ordered.McMurray sent me two emails stating that the mail delays do NOT extend to live chicks. Sure enough, I received my chicks within 48 hours of shipping.... It's just too bad that they were not taken better care of during shipping. As I mentioned previously, I've ordered from McMurray before and didn't lose a single chick. At least they were willing to stand behind the order and reship....especially considering that those 7 chickens cost me over $40.
Chicken math will get you every time! Thanks everyone for your input. I can only imagine how difficult it is to sex day old chicks! Here's hoping to only 2 and it gets along with my current roo. I also thought I was just going to be able to keep my 1st 6! I guess not! My son is already talking about adding more......
I will be holding onto them for awhile, just in case. Since they are raised together, maybe my son will take 2 as long as they get along, just incase something happens to one. We both have property that borders wooded areas. Guess we'll see. I wouldn't mind having a hen hatch out some eggs either so there's that.If you think you have extra boys with an all girl order, don't be too hasty in rehoming them if that's what you plan to do. I got 12 from tractor supply. Some were twice as big as the others and I declared with no doubt in my mind they sent me a wrong order with most boys. It ends up I've got some big boned girls with big feet and some very petite girls! I'm sure they aren't all sister's! I did get one boy.
