I would like to get some LF cochins so I can have broodies. I'm not interested in breeding them, just to have a broody or 2. Will the hatchery cochins go broody? Of course I wouldn't mind hatching them, but I don't need the males, and I don't want to spend a ton of money.

Should I go with hatchery stock, or hatch my own anyway. Does it make a big difference in broodiness? (if that's a word)

I'm not doing this right away, just thinking of what I'd like to add later. I gotta get my new coop built first.

I have a bunch of breeder cochins, and a few hatchery ones. 2 of my breeder ones are broody right now, but none of the hatchery ones have been yet. The hatchery ones aren't as big, but they are still very pretty and super friendly. If you just want a few pullets- I'd go with hatchery. Chicks from a breeder are usually straight run, and you know you'll end up with some roos.

Yeah, but if they never go broody, then that defeats the purpose for me. So it sounds like I need to hatch, and then get rid of the roosters. I love hatching, so that's not a problem, but I thought if I could get the same result from hatchery, then I might as well go that way. But it doesn't sound like that's the case.

Thanks for the info!

Nope all my birds are either from Cackle or Ideal hatchery so I can't do a comparison for you. I can tell you that the broodiness between 4 LF cochins and one bantam (don't know where she came from long story) is about to drive me insane. I can't have roosters so I am very leery to let them hatch anything. I hate to create roos with no place for them to go.

I only have bantam But i have breeder and hatchery. They still make just as good moms/ext. Though my breeders go broody spring and fall (on average) and my hatchery only in spring.

I have two LF Cochins - a white and a silver lace. Both hatchery and both went broody last Sept, hatched clutch October (one sat on Gumpsgirl's eggs). Both are back to laying, the silver laced still sleeps with her pullets tucked under her as best they can (pullets are laying also) - the Berry girls, Marion and Blue (you commented on them in another thread). My white cochin is starting to show the broody signs - rejecting a roo, the puffy run around with wing spread, giving me the evil eye when I collect eggs and today she growled at me. She is still laying - layed yesterday at least - but I believe by Sunday she will be full blown broody.

I also have a hatchery Bantam Cochin - she has lived with us since August 2009 - she is on her third broody clutch as we speak. I drove to CA to pick her and some others up on a Wednesday, she decided to go broody that Saturday.
