I just got back from an open house held by Griffith Hatchery in Fulton, MO. I was very surprised at the lack of biosecurity for the chicks, there were people milling about the various tubs of few day-old to few-week old chicks, all out in the open, practically no heat source for the little guys. There was a cage outside in 50-some degree weather (with a good wind to boot) with dying month-old chicks in it.
The various coops spread around the property had multiple breeds of birds in the, which leads me to wonder the breeding of chicks you might get when you order a specific kind.
I was definitely not impressed, especially at the tub of brightly dyed chicks which nobody seemed to know what breed they were. It was also incredibly dirty and, (to be expected,) smelly.
I am glad that I visited, it definitely convinces me to continue purchasing chicks from cackle.
