@Acre4Me Exactly! I can't tell you how mad it makes me when parents buy their kids $200+ shoes when they are on a food stamps program just because the shoes are designer!! I do understand the mentality that those who can't afford things want people to think they can but it sends the wrong message to kids. Valuing things over health and well-being is one of my trigger issues. It always makes me happy when kids take home eggs or produce we grow and tell me it tasted so good....McDonalds may be fast but we have quality!

I will definitely post pictures!!! I'm meeting with the student who is the Chicken Manager tomorrow to make the final decision.

Update!

Thanks to the poll, my students and I went with (drumroll) My Pet Chicken! I'd never even heard of the hatchery before people posted about it here so THANK YOU for adding to my knowledge and helping us make a good choice. We ordered 22 chicks (a mix of Delaware, Red Star, GLW, Welsummer, White Leghorn, and EE) that should ship on April 8.

Thanks again to everyone for posting about your experiences with hatcheries! :bow

I don't have any personal experience with shipping, but remember my dad getting some shipped in (Like 25 or more 5 different breeds) I want to say it was Murray McMurray but am not positive as it was like 20 years ago lol. I want to say 1 or 2 died but the rest thrived but they did mix up one breed for another and send one rooster that we never could ID the breed of back then. We called him the lucky rooster because we let him totally free range solo after he got in too many fights with one of the other roosters and he survived so much stuff it was crazy.

Anywho I voted for Cackle because I live in the same town as them and have purchased a bunch in person and all have been very healthy and decent quality and perfectly sexed so far.

Congratulations! Thats great that your class is getting baby chicks to raise.

When does school end for the year? Are they kept over the summer and then eggs produced in the fall?

I think that My Pet Chicken is a great choice! I have ordered chicks from there 3 times and most of them are doing great! Never have had problems working with them either. Good Luck with your chicks! :)

We end at the end of May and keep gardening/caring for the flock over the summer as a summer school elective option. We start school again in August and usually have eggs start coming right around then. This will be our third flock and our first try with chicks instead of pullets. Hopefully I did the math right and we do get our eggs right when school starts!

Hello everyone!

I'm pleased to report that our first chick shipment went extremely well. The chicks arrived on the 9th, 24 hours after shipping from Ohio. I'd prepared the students for the possibility of DOA chicks but instead we got a happy box of 22 healthy looking girls! All the chicks are doing well. We had two with a little pasty butt on the second day and only one of those had repeated problems today, the third day. Yay for MPC!
