Hatching comment

MOST broodies are great.sometimes you get one who decides after 19 days-I quit.Or I like sitting but I hate these peeping moving things. And THEY decide WHEN and IF and WHERE they will sit. DOn't get me wrong- I love mine- but I like to incubate too. But they are apples and oranges in comparison. Or at least oranges and grapefruits.

This is one reason my daughter and I decided to narrow our breeds to bantam cochins and silkies. I KNOW I'll get a broody hen instead of an incubator full of eggs...getting up all hours of the night...fiddling with the heat...adding water...taking water out...checking for pips...see if they're zipping...multiple thermometers and hygrometers...

Now I can just worry about the broody hen doing her job!!

Well, sometimes broodies are better, but not always. I got shipped eggs earlier this spring. I put 6 under a broody bantam and the other 8 in the bator. I was so sure I'd get some babies, especially under my broody. (My 1st hatch on shipped eggs was zero.) So I was expecting great things under my little hen. GUESS WHAT??? Zero hatch from both the bator and the broody. What a bummer!! I guess that is why we have the saying, "Never count your chickens before they hatch," even if they are under a broody hen.

I HAVE BABIES!!!! 24 days in the bator and they are here. I had 21 eggs, five are out and fluffy, and many more are pecking through their home as I type. I am so proud. I got worried when they weren't here on day 21. Barred rocks and RIR's
