Hatching Duck Eggs in a Suro: Day 31 and WRAP-UP

I'll be doing ducks next! Can't wait to see your results. Here was my cure for rolling eggs:

DAY 14: Temperature 99.5 F, humdity holding at 55%. Halfway through!

DAY 14, UPDATE: We did some candling tonight, to make sure everything was growing, and things look good! You can definitely see dark, C-shaped embryos, and many were clearly dancing around. The camera doesn't capture it particularly well, unfortunately, but here's a photo:

DAY 15: The temperature returned to 99.5 F almost immediately after candling last night, and the humidity returned to 55% within 20 minutes or so.

Today, everything is holding steady at 99.5 F and 55%. Incubator's looking good!

I've been having a terrible time trying to keep my Candling Photo Diary - it had to go a whole 5 days without updates because I can't get decent pictures anymore! I can see into the egg very well, and it's amazing, but the camera doesn't capture it.

All 4 of my eggs are still going strong. One's about a day behind the others developmentally, but it's vigorous, and I think it'll be fine.

Here are my Day 14 pictures for comparison - I had to edit them a LOT to be able to see anything. My little sisters have described the "dancing" embryos as "freaky little peanuts"!

DAY 16: Temperature holding steady at 99.5 F, and humdity around 55%. I hate to count my ducklings before they hatch, but my thoughts are wandering around to . . . what am I going to do with 17 ducklings?!?!?

Annarie, good to know mine look like yours! Hopefully that means we're on the right track. I share your frustration getting decent photos of the candling-- I thought we had a good camera, but this is proving to be a challenge.

What kind of incubator is this? My son and I are borrowing an LG right now but are looking to buy are own but we are having trouble deciding which one to get. I really like the looks of this one. Have you had good results with it?

It's an R-Com King Suro 20. It has electronic temperature and humidity control - it's similar to the Brinsea Octagon 20 Advance EX (the top of the line in the Brinsea Octagon series), but it's about half the price. It's still a pricey 'bator though, at somewhere around $250.

DAY 17: Temperature at 99.5 F, humidity at 55%. This week will be the real test, though, of the reliability of the incubator. I am leaving town for a week, and having a friend stay at the farm. She has strict instructions to call me if anything wavers, so we'll see how it continues to do. The one thing I did was change out the plain water bottle for a gallon jug, so she didn't have to worry about refilling the water. All I did was poke a hole through the plastic lid, and stick the tube in as far as it would go:

On the plus side, I won't have time this week to sit and obsess over the eggs! I'll be coming back the day before lockdown, so this incubation will have progressed very quickly for me!

It looks like we will be hatching together. I have 18 Khaki Campbell's on scheduled to hatch on the 31st. I also have 17 mixed chicken that i started a week later so they will all hatch together.
