Before you try that I'd suggest trying a safety hole first, sometimes they just need a little more air. Though it's possible the baby just isn't strong enough to hatch.

That's good. To answer you question, you can use a needle to scratch away a small groove until you can see a little into the egg. You just have to be really careful.
