does anyone feed just spent grain with added vits to their flocks? haven't found much info on it but I have some in the deep freeze and want to make sure my flocks are getting enough nutrition. I've been feeding this mix to My flock with scraps and freeze ranging twice a week and they seem much happier and healthier, just want to get the yalls opinions

Speaking of spent grains, a guy my husband works with brews his own beer so I will be getting some soon for my flock! I have been asking my husband for two weeks now when I am going to get some- which is kind of annoying- but if I get any it will help some with food costs!!

Mine does too. Just small batches so they don't get them very often. At first my chickies thought I was crazy feeding them that stuff but now they gobble it up.
Are spent grains the same as fermented grains?

Still waiting on necropsy but the mg was a HUGE one for me!!!!
Huzzah!
I just had a customer contact me regarding chicks sold to her early in the fall, these were sold straight run as they were from hatched eggs. 5 of the 8 turned out to be roos. Does anyone have a "canned" response for this when they are contacted? I mean, its obviously more than 50% but I have no control over these things.

You can also say Marans do tend to hatch more roos then pullets. I don't know about every breed but I really notice this in French Black Copper Marans. It sucks, because I wont sell anything I think is a roo. Once it has color on a comb it stays with me. I eat a lot of roosters! I do offer to take roos back ( I have a quarantine pen for em)

Welsummers are autosexing FYI

I have seen the autosexing Marans on the swap... Never asked about them... Might hafts look into them!
Think that is cuckoo.
You can give her a mustard egg and see if it breaks her as well
OMG I have to try this! I have one egg eater , and she is picky about food, shed go crazy.
It was the lighting in the room...lol. Here is a better pic:

Wow that is quite a difference.
Maybe they have finally realized eggs do sell and sell very well.
Or, people are getting wary of buying chickens from them. I think they may have ramped up in the last 6 months, and by anecdotal evidence as we have seen here, it is not going well. if they do not have pre ordered chicks, i bet they sell some eggs.
GREAT NEWS! GOD IS GREAT, DH GOT A JOB! he started today. it is a 2 hr drive but a job is a job. he will continue to look for something closer. thanks everyone for prayers and the lift ups when I was so down!
More Huzzah's!
Quick question, if a biology class is taking some of your eggs to hatch in class, do you quarantine them when they send chicks back?
Yes, ESPECIALLY there. Also you should be able to find on the internet the "average" amount of feed eaten by type of chicken by week. Look carefully if you are selling older chickens for food to make sure your not loosing money. If you are getting the equiviliant of 2/dz i bet you are. Fine if you are selling extra, but not if you are doing it for someone.
Very interesting... People who feed fermented feed often claim they get a higher female ratio. Once my hens start laying I will let eveyone know if it works for me.

Dh is just trying fermented feed, I'm excited to hear this, especially Whit aforementioned Marans. But Ill take them just not covering the yard Whit wasted feed.
Okay so NOT chicken related but I'm SUPER excited as I'm going to get an early bday present! There's a place in portland that offers butchery and charcuterie classes every once in a while and they just listed a whole hog charcuterie class and I'm going!!!!!

I can break down a pig no problem but it's been a while since I've cured meats and sausages in the restaurants. I really wanted to get in last year so I could cure a whole pig at slaughter but it didn't happen. I'm comfortable with bits but unwilling to wing potentially wasting a whole pig.

Man! I'm beside myself!!! I'll be able to cure a whole ham for prosciutto!!!!!

lomo, country ham, noix de jambon, pancetta, lardo, coppa, salami.......

Sorry had to share......

food geek rant over!
Wow, that is quite an undertaking. DH tried to go to a pig butchering class last year, then I pointed out to him we live in San Jose and he will never get a pig. he pouted for weeks. If they did these I would never be able to keep him away and we would have a smokehouse.
Did you use distilled acv or acv with mother? It won't work if your vinegar doesn't have the mother.
The other thing you need to check is its not pasteurized. I just noticed the vinegar we get Whit mother HAS been, so its still inert. That did not make me happy.

We spent all weekend building a inside chicken coop so we can go away on the weekends and do not have to put the girls out at the crack of dawn. They are LOVING it, many more perches then in they yard. . I didn't expect it to be so popular, thank goodness.

We have a wine festival this weekend last year we went all the way home every night. Now we can stay there and not worry about the drive, weee!

My ducks balked at the idea of spent grains for a few days. Over summer, they only got spent grains, with layer mash when I didn't have spent grain. I did have to give them calcium though, and they free ranged all day every day.

my poor babies are sick with a stomach virus :( can summer come and sick season go now lol. you know your 4 & 2 yr old are sick when all they do is lay on the couch all day with buckets in front of them and mommy rubbing their backs.
