I will be starting a new batch tonight. I happen to be a very visual learner, would it help you if I posted step by step pictures? I have a very small system right now, but it has been working pretty well for almost four months, minus the month I stopped over the holidays...

Someone an hour and forty five minutes away has nine turkey hens, $10 each, at two years of age. These kids of mine need to learn how to poop gold nuggets! I'm hoping that I can convince G that nine hens for ninety bucks and twenty bucks in gas is way worth it!

be careful, if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is. What kind are they. maybe the owner is just tired of feeding them. I have 28 turkeys and my feed bill is outragious that not counting the chickens also

For grown hens? That's WAY worth it! Unless they're in absolutely horrible shape or something. That's about what day-old chicks would cost -- let alone the cost of two years' worth of feed.

Can they text you pictures or something? I'd hate to see you drive that far only to discover they're mite-ridden and awful...

They already sent pictures, and they look to be in excellent shape (as best you can tell by pictures). They're all bbw and bbb, but that's exactly what I want. Really, they're worth about $25 a piece. ButI've had a lot of interest in eggs, but since I can only send four eggs at a time, the shipping ends up making it not worth it. So, these guys would be perfect. We travelled four hours and spent $60 on four hens before, one I ran over, two ran away and one was sold. The ONLY one we liked was the one I ran over, the rest were regular bronze and flighty as sin. I hated them, lol.

At two years, I'm guessing I have one more year of production. And, I'm willing to bet that they're paying a few hundred dollars every month. I know how those full grown bb varieties eat. I have the advantage of free brewery grain and fermented mash, which cuts feed prices immensely.

Exactly. Unfortunately, most people never take advantage of their resources. Most people pay $35-$40/100lbs of feed. We're buying a layer mash at $23.75/100lbs, then that can be cut to a quarter with brewery grains and even less if sprouting fodder.

That's why we all need to grow fodder!!

Right now, I have $60 in chicken cash. I never mention that I never BUY eggs in cash, but from the account, so yea, lol. But, still, gas money is covered, just need another $30 in cash to get the nine hennies.
