I am finally done. 3 brooders and 1 coop/pen cleaned out. 4 groups of chicks moved. After next week's hatch, I will be officially out of brooder space. I need Spring!!!!

Congrats, madamwlf! Of course, now instead of worrying about brooders we get to start worrying about coops!

Looks like I am definitely in the minority on this. I tend to brood mine much cooler than recommendations and give them much more area to stay cool. I have had my NYDhatch chicks outside without heat since 5 weeks of age. By the way, if anyone needs a Birchen Marans splash or blue cockerel, I have several available. LOL Craigslist is fixing to become a firm friend of mine.

I was mostly worried about the abrupt change in temp, caj -- usually I kick mine out of the house pretty early, too, but I wouldn't expect them to go from 60 degrees to 15 degrees in the course of 6 hours. Feathers or no, that's too much of a change too swiftly for my peace of mind.

. Would have been cool!

Yeah, it would have, dang it!!! Ah well.

I know its not a chicken but meet my newest foster pug Brodi, I picked him up this afternoon. Brodi was surrendered in love as his first human Daddy is now in hospice and the family could not take him in. He marks and as a special bonus poops the house when nervous!

He seems to be a sweet sweet boy though and was quick to find the couch

!

Oh, what a sweetie, puglady! And I wouldn't be surprised if some of his behavior passes as he feels more secure and happy -- in some ways losing friends is even harder on dogs, I think. They don't have much by way of coping mechanisms, they're just sad and scared and unsettled. I'm so glad you could open your home and heart to him!

LOL! She did!!!

I swear these pics should be labeled "Do-it-yourself Chicken Ranch -- just unpack and hatch!"

Speaking of, I really really WILL get pics in the next few days of everything unpacked and all my sweet baby chickies and big chickies and hey, I just had an Olandsk dwarf hatch too! Whee!

Sure, I will go get them.

View from top looking down at both thermostats. The wires then go thru a hole into the back area where the plug comes in - all the connecters are back there.

This is looking at it from the other side of the 'bator. The wire comes in- goes to the top wafer, then a blue wire comes out and goes to the bottom wafer, then the red wire goes back into the back again.

This is a picture of the connections in the back - black is the incoming power, blue goes to the top thermostat, red I believe is to the heater coil.. Unfortunately they use the blue and the red wires for the turner too - so if you are back there make sure you pick the right wires.

You might have to unscrew the top back screws before you can take the lid off. You can also cut the wires from the inside of the 'bator and just use the two that come into the area you can get to - blue is power in, red is to the heater coil.

If you do decide to take the top off, buy a roll of thin window foam - the stuff you put around doors and windows to keep out cold air. When you take it apart you will find the old stuff there - best to have it on hand in case you tear anything or in case it needs replacing.

I understand the wafers are run in "tandem" in case one is stuck on the other will click off. Just in case there is a malfunction/spike with the electronic thermostat I was planning on only replacing one wafer. The other would be adjusted just a bit higher than the temps I want it to keep. However, if the electronic thermostat goes off - the other wafer wouldn't help.

Hopefully the Bator (and Pallet) Queen will drop by with what she did

- although I understand her son-in-law did the actual wiring she would probably know if he needed an extra relay - and you might not need to keep the other wafer. I am in awe of what she did with those cabinets, and the pallets.. all really amazing. It gave me hope I might be able to fix mine up with the electronics too - and I ordered mine and just got it in the mail today

Edited cuz I got confused on red/blue wires.. had to look again.
Thanks! My son did do all the wiring..... I was kinda out of the loop on that so I am no help...... I would LOVE to see a TURNER on one of the cabinets. I have never see the turner on a REAL incubator. My turner has gone out AGAIN! I need to find a long term fix.... very frustrating!

He said from the manufacturer they are about $7-8,000. He raises English Bulldogs and brought it up here from KY only to realize he doesn't need it because he now has a heated shop building. There is no floor in this, so we will need to build one. Half will be for my birds and the other half for some of Rachael's, but we are putting it here. We were going to build one this spring, but we never could have done it for the price we got this for-and it comes with chain-link runs as well!
Very cool, and great for winter chores next year!

I love seeing how everyone houses their birds, we go all open while those with snow need a space to not knee deep in the white stuff

Please clear wife2abirdman. Paypal received. Thanks for the prompt payment.
Cleared!
Quote: I would love to be able to do that, but it isn't happening up here, where we get single digits WAY too often!
I hate taking care of the birds when it is so cold and there are so many, so this will be wonderful! He said it is really well insulated, too.
