we ferment everything fed here and the results have been a feed bill cut in HALF! Fantastic fertility (no drop from last year at all) and wonderful feathering on everyone and molts recovered from quicker.

Krazy.fermenting is using whole grains or feed with water and acv WITH the mother, let sit for 3-4 days and stir daily to keep mixed well. Once it ferments start feeding. We run 2 sets of buckets for each grain/feed so we always haave one in reserve and ready to feed from as we empty the first bucket.

GabbleBabble: I hatched out 1 little chick from your eggs and the egg said funky but it came out looking sorta like a Gold Laced Cochin chick. Any ideas what it could be.

It could be the boxes. I have an actual brooder that I use for day old chicks for the first week I can put everything in there except Turkey Poults. For some reason they die if I put them in there. Don't know why but they do. The turkeys do just fine in a tub brooder but not in my actual brooder. Maybe the box has something to do with them.

I had an actual wood and wire cage brooder, but it was a pain to clean. I tried the tubs and other things. The cleaning became a huge thing. So I went to cardboard boxes. Thick, huge boxes with a custom built wire top. One has a child gate laying accross the top. The boxes can be used a few times before needing to be trashed. I also use large puppy pads in the bottom, with pine shavings covering it. My sister works for a chemical company and they get these super large boxes when their 1 gallon containers ship in. (Me and two kids can fit in this thing, sitting down.)

I have an image of this in my head now.

I have some from just about everyone. I was swimming in SFH chicks a week ago. I am wondering if it is the boxes I am using for brooders. I dunno. I have enough chicks left to have a foundation group. The ones I have left came from you and GFF. DH thinks it is the feed, and the cardboard boxes I use as brooders. Which I would agree, but it is only the SFH. Everything else is running wild and crazy happy. BTW- every set of eggs I have gotten from you Beth (with the exception of the ones the cat threw into the floor.

) Have gotten a 95% hatch rate off of. Makes me a HAPPY Hermit! The Serama are just the cutest tiny things. One looks MF. The others have alot of white in them. One is dark brown.

I use cardboard boxes in addition to my brooders (aka: rabbit cages) when I run out of brooder space, which is everyday.

I have no issues with boxes. I just use and dispose.

Feathered legs? If it was feathered legs then it is a cochin color cross.
No Feathered legs or just slight feathering then it is a TN Thumper. Which is an American Gamefowl. They are really sweet kind birds. Very pretty, and not seen often, a favorite for kids showing AGF. I'll have to send you pictures of the adults before they go to their new homes.

Nope feather legs and feet. That's why I thought Cochin. But the coloring looks similar to a gold laced.

Yep mother is a silver laced Frizzle. Dad was a Partridge. Mother is still here, but father is gone. I have one more cochin I have to get a home for then I should be on tract with all those guys. Birchen hen with a bad looking tail.

In regards to the SFH. I have heard numerous complaints about the chicks weak and dieing also. I would just guess, like everything else ..interbreeding.

Not enough stock, all the birds are somehow related. And shipping issues. Just my take.
I got eggs from contrastphoto and KYTinpusher to add to my flock, just for some different related blood line...just in case there is.

I have just started to hatch mine to fill orders and add to my flock. I hatched 8-9 so far and all are alive and well. Sold 3 already and have not heard otherwise. I have more hatching today. IMO the healthiest will survive.

I think we all see problems with imported birds. Heck, even domestic stock.

We plan on in the fall buying some of GFF new line of SFH they have just brought in a new blood line
