Hatching Eggs / Paypal CHAT Thread

Okay, all you wise turkey peeps - I got my hatchery surprise this morning and I'm trying to ID the 7 turkeys they sent. I assume they're white and bronze, but the hatchery also offers royal palms and narragansett turkeys - and the poults in the catalog look the same for the breeds. Is there a magic way to tell them apart?

as palms start growing wing feathers, there will be black in them, Narries, look like the bronze, but their feather tips/barring will be white/gray and not a brown color...post some pics

Here are pics - They wouldn't stay still!

I am not an expert, but the brown one looks like Bronze Big Boy. (I have been looking at turkey pic's all day...)

Quote: ummm...the two yellow ones in the back with webbed feet are not turkeys!

well, its kind of hard to tell, the white ones will have to grow more on their wings, if they stay solid white, then they are whites...lol
the other looks like a narrie to me...but do not take my word for it, I am far from being an expert on them...was that the only four breeds they offered?

I put the ducks in with them for today because they were running over the chicks. :) It's Cackle hatchery - they offer
white
bronze
royal palm
blue slate
bourbon red
narragansett
black spanish

It's a pretty nifty deal - for $61 (shipping included) they send you a box of birds. I got 2 ducks, 8 turkeys, and 32 assorted chicks. For layers and freezer birds, it works for me!

well that actually kind of sucks...cause Narries, Bronze and Red Bourbons will start out with that kind of coloring...looks like you will have to wait....the white ones you should be able to tell within a week

Hmm... maybe this afternoon I'll be able to get better pics of all 3 of the darker colored ones. They seem to have sent everything else in pairs, so I guess it's possible I have multiple breeds...

Wow. $61 for 8 turkeys alone would be a pretty good deal. Chicks would buy be an extra. Unfortunately for me, I just bought some nice salmon Faverolle eggs and am broke. Plus- I REALLY don't like mystery birds

OK, all of you chicken experts, I have been looking at different ways to reduce feed costs. I noticed a 50 lb back of 20% protein range cubes are less than $10. Ingredient label says grain byproducts as the first ingredient. Is there any reason if I am doing fermented feed that these couldn't be added to my whole grains to bring up protein? Too much salt maybe? Just trying to figure if it would be a good or BAD idea. I didn't buy any, but I am anxiously awaiting the response from breeders/long term chicken people.

COF did you get my pm about the mandarins? If they're not for sale or not laying no worries. I just know Michelle is over the moon with the ducklings she got from you.
