So would you guys say it has generally been worth it to add to your flock. I am just really nervous about the whole thing, but I would love some more Bourbons with another bloodline. I think I have a good thing going here with my Tom, he is quite proficient!

After the scare of some people on here, I will only go with eggs or chicks. If I can't hatch it or it isn't a day old, it's not coming here. I have far too much invested in my birds to risk it. At this point I'm going to stop all foot traffic to my place as well.

I keep boot covers now and have anyone who is walking out to the chicken houses or pastures wear them. I even put ziplock bags on BHep's little one!

Yes. I think we are both saying the same thing, just in a different way.

We definitely need new blood, but right now we are limited with what we have.

Very limited but you know, some of these breeds started the same way. Just look at the Augsburger. Extremely limited gene pool to work with.

We allow no one inside our fences, in the house, or the garage (since we quarentine there). I dont care who you are and or how good of friends we are.

We do local hours each Saturday from 12 - 4, but control all foot traffic to the lower driveway (front porch to our gates on the driveway)
no one handles any birds for any reason prior to buying them.
We wash the porch a few times a week, and the entire driveway weekly (Sunday) as well pushing the water down the hill away from the house to the street. 1 because of foot traffic, two because the geese leave "presents"

I need to paint the front porch, but it is hard to get done with the weekly traffic. Will end up closing one weekend so we can block off the porch and get it washed and painted again.

Most definitely! And I think you mentioned that you are crossing your Black Barths with Ameraucana, right? That will also help with diversity. The two breeds are very similar in a lot of ways.

I think the Augsberger came from a pool of around 150 or 200 birds. Very similar to the Olandsk Dwarf's limited gene pool. Thankfully, many of the rare breeds are coming back.

I plan to put some in with him. Yeah, very small gene pool. It will be interesting to work with them. First time I've work with such a rare bird.
