I won't know until after they ship them.
But will you even know THEN???? Ok its an evil thought
LOL You and I were just talking about that yesterday on the phone...Rofl
My phone has still not charged btw, I think the battery is crap.
I have had the WORST luck with phones this year. 3 of the nexus phones stopped charging ( OK, the 4th phone I dumped in the toilet... they didn't cover that one) DH says it has to do with the way they put in the ports. I charge it all the time, and used to use it while it was charging, apparently that's a known issue, ugg.
I am taking a poll! I hope you will put in your two cents. I met a local family that home schools and one of their projects is that their kid's create and run small business. So, they contacted me to see if I would show them around and they could look at the set-up because the 9 year-old daughter has an "egg business" that is apparantely very successful and has been saving to increase her business. I was trying to find a way to support her "small" (pun intended) business because I think it is really, really cool. She even has board meetings and has to account for her investments!

Anyway, after a lot of thought, I came up with an idea. I am going to provide her with the breeding stock of three different rare breeds of chickens. Next year, she will give me 12 hatching eggs for each chicken I gave her and then sell me any extra hatching eggs for $1/each from Febuary to April. The rest of the year she can sell chicks, eggs, hatching eggs or whatever and keep all the profit. Pretty good deal for us both, huh??? Since I can't have roosters, it is a way to breed. Anyway, here is my poll: If you could have only three breeds of chickens to raise for breeding purposes in Minnesota, which three would you pick for ease of care, temperament, hardiness and profitability?
What is the PURPOSE here? does she want to sell chicks? Lots? or just exotics? are you looking for most popular or the ones that have the least competition? can the people she is going to sell to have roosters?

If they cant, and she can deal with extra roos, Cream legbars hands down. I could sell those to every single person Who walks in my door. blue egg!! Guaranteed girl!! Don't eat much!! I agree Orphingtons are the most popular chicken ( I mean, who doesn't want an orphington, really??) but there is a ton of hatchery competition out there and every feedstore will have sexed chicks. If that is competition for her, its not a great choice.

I looked into what people want that they cant get from a feed store already sexed. Because sexing is the big kicker around here, I loose 2 out of 3 inquiries because people are scared of the kids getting attached to a rooster. If her selling point is going to be rare and exotic and cant find anywhere else, and she has that market around, and is willing to find those people, ignore the rest of this.

That leaves you with Bantams, Autosexing breeds, and DARK egg layers ( have her save some of her darkest shells from her first eggs so they see how exciting it is) And when I say bantams, for sheer selling power, I mean silkies. Mind you silkies are crap layers. But as far as I can tell they are cold hardy, and their combs are covered in fur. of course, that can be an issue if they freeze that fur, id guess, I don't know much about that. Oslandic dwarfs are from what I know, not the best hatchers. FCBM's hatch well at home, but don't ship terribly well. But people LOVE them, its a fat and sassy chicken that is really good eating and lays an unforgettable egg. They are black, so heat can be a problem, they were dying around here over 110.

Beidenflurs ( OK that was horribly spelled) are autosexing and big enough to eat the roos, but of course they are probably not a viable option until next year. Jaerhorns are also amazing. But they look a bit like cream legbars, so if people are just getting backyard chickens they like a variety of looks.

Icelandics are awesome, and basques are awesome. And Swedish flower hens are also awesome. None are dual purpose, but they are pretty and don't eat a ton and lay well. I find icelandics flighty however, I did not love them. But they give you the single most variety of one chicken breed. You can literally get almost anything with them! So if you want all your girls to me pets that a re not alike but be able to know every one at a glance, tis a great flock choice.

So, it boils down to what does she want? rarity, sales, sexability?
Now I've seen everything!

I've been given the finger by a chick.
another baba yaga!!
they chewed thru the chicken wire right? You need to put the welded wire up, the 2" x 4" holes by whatever height you need
electric fence around the bottom, 3 or 4 strands about 4" apart
are they going under the tin?
the raccoons around here shred chicken wire. its welded wire, hogwire panels or harwider cloth or double strenght chain link. But if that is the problem, its fixable so don't give up hope! <hugs>
