Hatching Eggs / Paypal CHAT Thread

I wonder if it's the path of shipped eggs that give bad hatches.  I've had some real good hatches.  BHEP sent 7 or 8 BLRWs and 7 hatched.  Papa brooder sent 20 Eng Orps and all hatched all the way from Calif. to Ohio.  14 White Ameracucans eggs Ohio to Ohio and 12 hatched.  13 Wheaton Ameraucans eggs from Maria Wolf and 9 hatched.  8 Bantam Lav Ameracuans eggs from Little Ameracuan Mom ? and 1 hatched.  24  Barred Rocks Duckworth and Stukel lines from Ron Presley and 20 hatched.  8 Cornation Sussex eggs from MrsMoon Cat and 6 hatched.  6-8 eggs didn't write down Speckled Sussex from GableBabble and 6 hatched.  17 Russian Orloffs from Ohio to Ohio (ebay) and 0 hatched.  15 Rhodebar eggs from ebay and 7 hatched.  12 Black Spitzhaubens eggs and 4 hatched.  So I've had some real good hatched and some real bad hatches..  I have Pilgrim Goslings and turkey poults that have hatched and are coming out of my ears.  My Asils are hatching like crazy.  My Samartras aren't hatching.  Anyway Some breeds are doing great and others aren't.

Can I have all my eggs shipped to you and you hatch them for me!!!! ????

I have noticed that the path the USPS uses seems to affect my hatches and the hatch on the eggs I have shipped. NE is terrible. CA good hatches. Nothing develops from Ohio. Iowa is great.

Maybe we should all keep track of where the shipments come from and follow hatch rate by area.

The cool thing about dorkings is they also have a really mellow temperment.

The bad thing is it is getting hard to find them.  You can get the silver greys from the hatcheries but the reds and whites you have to go to a breeder for and most times you have to wait a while.  But the silver-greys are pretty easy to sex as day olds which people like.  They aren't  quite "autosexing" but with an educated eye, you can tell by the wider headstripe and eye-liner on the girls.

(I cant help because my flock is now closed...but I can promote them!)

We have someone local into Dorkings. Don't know if she ships, but she is really working on her flock.

How does astronomy predict poor hatches though?

The farmers almanac uses planet alignments and moon phases. I know a lot of the evidence is anactdotal but I still watch out for mercury retrogrades. Moon phases are an interesting one, as we are 90% or so water. Eggs even more so.

I was thinking we could make a program for this. Anyone have a student that needs a term project? I could probably get dh to give me about 10 hrs but not until the work slows down, he is currently doing overtime up the wazoo. ( least they are paying him to do 60 hrs that is not so common in Cali)

You would need somewhere to get the data of what path the mail takes so you know what sorting center it goes to and how many.

I was having fantastic hatches then it went south. Dh and I were talking about the things that are likely to affect eggs that changed this year and I think the most important are
Time in shipping has gone up
More x raying. He thanks it is possible this could not only give you clears but if there is high mineral content in the egg damage the embryos that would give you more quitters. That is speculation however. I've been trying to remember to use aluminum foil.
Packages are sitting in sorting centers longer. This will also create temp issues.
Packages are getting jostled more with no hand sorting. The membrane starches, especially in big eggs allowing the chick to get too big to turn.
No one has had "normal" weather for them. What you know works for your normal humidity does not. This also leads to big chicks or drowned chicks.
Feed . I remember last year there was some scare over feed for ducks. It was a crappy year for grain and I wonder if the grain was just not as nutritious. I know we are all over the country but the problem was widespread.

I'm going to go back to weighing some eggs on every tray and track down all the problems I can solve....

CORANCHER are you still around?????

I opened my bator today to turn eggs NOTHING was due but there was one little baby in the bottom. It was from the guinea eggs you sent me but that was not a guinea.... neither was the egg... way too thin of a shell.... WHAT DID I GET?

Is it lavender? or blue? there is some yellow or red around its face. Must go look at your birds now... I think it might be a bantam. I hope it will be ok with the week old chicks

seemed fine.

I love surprises like that. Maybe not what you were expecting, but it is cute nonetheless.
